Eltham Argus Apr 20, 1911: WEDDING - THOMPSON - BARNARD

A quiet wedding was celebrated yesterday in the Methodist Church, the parties being Mr. A.W. Thompson, Assistant Schoolmaster, of Taihape and Miss Daisy Barnard, eldest daughter of Mr. F.H. Barnard, the local postmaster.  The day was an ideal one for the occasion.

The bride's dress was chiffon silk taffeta, with yoke and sleeves of silk lace, veil and orange blossoms, and she wore a handsome gold brooch, the gift of the bridegroom and a beautiful cateye pendant, the gift of her aunt, Mrs. H. Barnard.  She carried a lovely shower bouquet of white chrysanthemums and asparagus fern.

She was attended by three bridesmaids - Miss Ida Barnard (principal), Miss Connie Thompson (sister of the bridegroom) and Miss Annie Barnard.  They wore cream serge dresses, braided with  silk braid and wore amethyst velvet hats and carried shower bouquets of cosmos.  The bridegroom's gifts to the elder bridesmaids were gold brooches set with garnets and to Miss Annie Barnard a beautiful gold and amethyst pendall.  Mr. Gabites acted as best man and Mr. Garnet Williams and Mr. Len Barnard as groomsmen.  After the ceremony the guests were entertained at the residence of the bride's mother.

The presents were numerous.  The bride's travelling costume was a dark brown tailor-made and she wore a black velvet picture hat lined with white satin and trimmed with large black ostrich plumes. The church was nicely decorated by friends of the bride.

The happy party left for Taihape by the 3 p.m. train with the usual good wishes of friends and relatives.

Mr. Alfred William Thompson, First Assistant Master of the Taihape Public School, was born 22 Sep 1885  1885, at Sandon, near Bulls. He served his time as a pupil-teacher in the Sandon, Apiti, Kelvin Grove, and Aramoho schools. After relieving for one month at Foxton, he was appointed master of the Clydesdale school, where, in 1905, he completed his D certificate, and was soon afterwards promoted to his present position. Mr. Thompson is secretary of the Awarua Rugby Union, and a member of nearly all the local sports clubs.
