advice has been received-of the death in action in France on 27th
September of Gunner Ernest Allan Barnard (5th Battery, 2nd Brigade),
youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. George Barnard, of Derwent-street, Island
Bay. The late Gunner Barnard, who was 21 years of age, was a very popular
young man. He was on the staff of Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co. when he
enlisted, and was a member of D Battery, whose Roll of Honour is a lengthy
one. The Barnard family is one of those with
a war-service record to be proud of. Gunner Barnard was wounded in an
earlier engagement, and had only just returned to the front. His brother,
Sergeant J. L. Barnard, who has been a member of the New Zealand
Expeditionary Forces since the outbreak of war, was very severely wounded
at the Battle of Flers, and after prolonged hospital treatment in England,
was able to return home a few days ago. Another brother, Sergeant G.
Barnard, who left with the 23rd Reinforcements, is still on active
service. Military Personnel
