1920 12 Aug: Maude vanished. Evening
Post, MISSING AGAIN Mrs. Maud Barnard, of Hall-street, Newtown, who
recently wandered away from her home and was subsequently found in an
exhausted condition in the scrub at Mornington, is reported to be
missing again. Mrs. Barnard, accompanied by her husband, went into a
drapery establishment in Lambton-quay on Monday afternoon, and the
husband agreed to wait while some purchases were made in a ladies'
department. After waiting half-an-hour Mr. Barnard made inquiries and
found that his wife had disappeared. He immediately had fuller inquiries
made, and when no trace of the woman was found made a, search of the
Mornington Estate, whither Mrs. Barnard had previously wandered. The
police, who were not notified till yesterday, are assisting in the
search, together with private parties. The missing woman is 35 years of
age, 5ft 5in in height, medium build, and at the time of her
disappearance was wearing it blanket coat (no pockets), black hat, with
black velvet band around it, black shoes, and grey gloves. 1925 NZ Truth
26 Sept: When Eustace Barnard married Maude Elizabeth Barnard a good
many -years back, the union resulted in a family of four. But one day in
Wellington when Maude went shopping in Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd.,
hubby waited out on the footpath with the four offspring around him.
Mrs. Barnard then, as far as Eustace and the kiddies were concerned,
vanished, and that was back in 1920. Eustace made application for
divorce in Christchurch this week, and he added that police and friends
had searched Wellington and other places for the missing spouse. Even
England had been got in touch with, as it was thought that Maude
might have gone to visit her people. The petitioner for divorce could
suggest no reason why his wife should disappear into a drapery store and
not come out again to him. William Gillis, a parson, told how he had
tried to help without success. A decree nisi was
granted

Adventist Archives: BARNARD. After a
short illness, Eustace Barnard, like a tired child, fell asleep at the
Auckland Hospital, N.Z., on May 8, 1946. Brother Barnard accepted the
truth about twenty years ago through studies by Pastor W. Gillis. For
some time he worked in the S.H.P. factory at .Christchurch, and a little
over a year ago moved to Auckland. Our brother leaves a devoted wife,
Sister Barnard of Papatoetoe, and her only son Arthur to mourn the loss
of a loving husband and father. There are two sons and two daughters by
a former marriage: Len, who worked in New Guinea under ANGAU and is
known to many readers of the "Record"; Dora (Mrs. Mclvor), of Petone,
Bessie, and Eustace. Services were conducted by Pastor Uttley and the
writer. A better day is dawning when we shall meet never to part again.
