OBITUARY: JAMES HOOPER; A foundation member of the Hawera Horticultural Society and a former Farmers' Co-op executive, Mr James Hooper Barnard, JP, died at the age of 86.

Mr Barnard was born in Palmerston North and attended the Palmerston North Boys' High School. His second job was with the Farmers' Co-op and he managed branches at Kaponga, Inglewood, Eltham and Waverley before becoming departmental manager at Hawera.

Mr Barnard was a JP for 42 years. As well as being a Hawera Horticultural Society founder, he was a fellow of the Royal Institute of Horticulture and a life member of the Eltham Horticultural Society. He was a former member of the South Taranaki Camellia Society, judging flower shows for many years and was a patron of the South Taranaki Cacti Society.

Mr Barnard leaves his wife, a daughter Shirley (Mrs McKerrow, Lower Hutt) and three sons, Messrs Bill (Bell Block) Graham (Hawera) and Ian Barnard (Hamilton)

His wife Mary Ann Barnard died aged 96 Years on 22 Jan 1999, last Address: Eventide Rest Home,Eltham. Date of Cremation: 26 Jan 1999

2006 - William died 2nd June 2006 in New Plymouth aged 76 Years and his cremation was on 06 Jun 2006 at the Taranaki Crematorium, Junction Road, New Plymouth.

Both have been match officials for more than 20 years. Mr. Barnard (54) a depot officer for the Hawera District Council, has been in charge of junior matches in Hawera since 1960. In latter years, he has handled an average of two games each week.

Mr. Barnard, who controls games from the senior fourth grade level and below, with occasional stints in higher grades, has opted to stay a junior referee rather than take on senior appointments. "It's in the junior ranks they are short of referees", he says. He is a former secretary of the referees' southern division and for several years appointed referees to its junior fixtures.

Dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Bryan, Anne and Kelsie, Ian and Lyn, Linda and Hugh Caddick, Darla and Hugh le Flemming. Loving grandmother of her 8 grandchildren. A private cremation held in England and a memorial service held Wednesday, January 8, 1992 at 11am at the St. Mary's Anglican Church, Hawera.

1998 - 21 Dec GRAHAM HOOPER BARNARD d: in Taranaki Base Hospital, New Plymouth. At the time of his death, he was living at 25 Glasgow Street, Hawera and was 68 years old. His funeral service was held at 9.15 a.m. on Thursday, 24th December, 1998  Headstone at the Hawera Cemetery commemorates Graham and for Nancy.
