JOHN EDWARD* BARNARD was born Q4 1854 Horsley, Gloucestershire to parents Thomas (b; abt 1832; occ: carpenter; and Mary Barnard (b: abt 1833; occ dressmaker); He d: d Dec Q 1921 Hackney, London. Other siblings in his family were: William Henry (b: abt 1862), Julia (b abt. 1859), Anne (b: abt. 1861), George Raymon (Remon) (b abt 1860) and Kate Elizabeth (b: 1863; occ: 1881 Farmer, Hackney) Thomas William (b: 1856; occ: 1881 errand boy, Hackney)Edward, a plasterer by trade, decided to immigrate to Otago, New Zealand on the ship "James Nicol Fleming" He sailed from London on the 20th Feb 1874 and arrived 3 months later at Dunedin on 24th May 1874. The James Nicol Fleming was built in 1869, a composite clipper of close on 1000 tons and was a sister ship to the Otago, built on exactly the same lines. An exceedingly fast ship and only twice in her career took more than the average 90 days for the passage from Glasgow to Otago. In 1879, owing to financial problems at the City of Glasgow Bank (which also involved one of the directors after who she was named), her name was changed to Napier - Src: White Wings - Sir Henry Brett Edward Barnard found work at Oamaru 74 miles (119 km) north of Dunedin and 5 months later he married CAROLINE HERBERT in St Pauls Presbyterian Church, Oamaru on 26 Oct 1874. Caroline was born 14 Jan 1855 in Shoreditch, London and was bapt: 17 May 1855 at St. John The Baptist, Shoreditch, London. Her parents were James and Caroline Herbert who mar: 1839 (Src: UK Barnard genealogist David) Caroline, a domestic servant aged 19
yrs, sailed on the "Hindostan" from London 28th March 1874 and arrived at
Port Chalmers 13 May 1874 a fortnight before Edward and while there,
they may have met. North Otago Times, 18 Nov 1875: OAMARU HOSPITAL. The usual monthly meeting of Committee took place in the Secretary's office, Tees street, on Tuesday evening. Present Messrs Hislop (in the chair), J. Bee, T. A. Clowes, J. Mainland, T. H. Brown, R. L. Kulo, N. Fleming, E. Rowland, and the Secretary (J. Church). The minutes of last monthly meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read. It bore reference merely to business of a routine character. The Building Committee reported that they received the following tenders for painting wood and stone work of the Hospital Buildings: C. F. Wilson, £21; E Barnard, £19 11s 6d; C. Harris, £27; H. Cowley, £32; H. Fuller, £29 10s. Mr Barnard's tender was accepted, contract to be finished on 30th inst. Their son Edward was born at Oamaru 29 Mar 1876 and shortly after Edward and Caroline decided to return to England. Husband: John Edward BARNARD (Alt.
