In consequence of the amazing and offensive remarks made the chairman of the Hospital Board at its last meeting, which appear to have been endorsed by a majority of the numbers present, we beg to tender our resignation as members of the honary medical staff. In order that the patients may not be neglected pending a reorganisation of the Medical staff, we are willing to visit the Hospital until the next monthly meeting of the Board. Dr. Barnard, a well-known local medical man, committed suicide this morning by shooting himself. Deceased met with a bicycle accident during the week, and was confined to his bed. At 5 o'clock this morning the noise as of a chair falling was heard in his bedroom, and immediately afterwards the doctor rushed out and bounded down stairs, firing two shots from a revolver and screaming. He then rushed to the lawn and shot himself dead through the head. At the inquest to-day, a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned. Wanganui Herald, 7 December 1903: SUICIDE OF DR BARNARD. A painful sensation was created in the town yesterday by the report of a suicide which sadly proved only too true, that.Dr. Barnard had committed suicide by shooting himself at 5 o'clock in the morning. The reason for the rash act was attributed an accident which befell him on Tuesday morning last, which necessitated him taking to his bed. The news of the sad fatality was communicated to Dr Porritt who on arrival pronounced life to be extinct. The deceased gentleman has been a resident of Wanganui for about five years, and was well known and highly respectedby all classes of the community. He took an active interest in golf, tennis and sport generally. Very sincere regret at his sad end will be felt by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Mrs Barnard died about two years ago.
