Temuka Leader: 24 Dec 1881:  Wife desertion - Alfred Wadsworth, formerly of the Orari Hotel was brought before the Timaru Court last Thursday on a charge of wife desertion and remanded to Dunedin where the warrant was issued

Otago Daily Times: 30 Dec 1881: Wife desertion - Alfred Wadsworth was charged with deserting his wife Alice Wadsworth and laving them without provision Alice Wadsworth stated that the accused left her in Dec 188o. They were living at Orari near Timaru where her husband had some hundred acres of land under crop, five or six horses, harness and farm implements. He left her one Sunday not saying where he was going and his father (Thomas Wadsworth) came and gave her £1 a week for some time. These payments were continued only until May of this present year when she went to live with her sister, leaving her four elder children in the care of her father-in-law. The latter stated that the property was made over to him. She had received nothing from her husband or her father-in-law since May last. Cross examined by the accused: Accused had left the house tolerably well furnished and enough to eat for a week or two. She did not drink or neglect the children. Did not know whether the land belonged to the accused but the horses did. Witness came to Dunedin to better herself. The accused stated that he had kept a hotel at Orari some two years ago but had been obliged to give it up. Since then, he had done ploughing etc in the neighbourhood. Had taken up some land on a deferred payment system, and was in possession of the farming implements, which, however, had been mostly given to him. Owned only 2 horses and had bought a stallion, which he had been unable to pay for. Witness was in very poor health and had been ordered away by his doctors and to enable him to go, had sold what implements etc he possessed to his father and left for Sydney. Had returned only a fortnight ago, the trip having cost him about £150. On arriving home found the house had been broken up, the furniture sold or pawned, all their jewellery etc for drink. It was through his wife that he left the hotel bankrupt.

Thomas Wadsworth, father of the accused, stated thtat he had paid prosecutrix altogether £21 odd since December 1880 to May last, besides paying a bakers bill of £10. She herself had paid for nothing all the time but was neglecting the children. By her own request he took four children in May after she expresed a desire to let him keep tham and go and live with her sister, taking the baby with her. Had repeatedly during the time he was making these weekly payments found her drunk. His worhip said that the womn could not be expected to maintain herself and so young a child. He therefore would make an order for the payment of 5/- a week.

30 Dec 1881 Timaru Herald 15 May 1882 : Magistrates Court: Alfred Wadsworth charged with disobeying an order to contribute to the support of his wife - remanded to Dunedin

1882 Timaru-Herald/1882/4/20; Bankruptcy notices — Alfred John Wadsworth

Otago Daily Times 16 May 1882 - Alfred Wadsworth arrested on warrant at Timaru, was charged for disobeying an order to pay 5s a week toward the support of his child Alice Wadsworth, an inmate of the industrial school Bail allowed £4 in surety of his own recognisance and another of £4

Evening Star 16 May 1882: Alfred Wadsworth was charged with disobeying an order adjudging him to contribute he sum of 5s per week towards the support of Alice Wadsworth - the som of £4 now due. Defendant stated that since the order he had been in delicate health and had not been in employment until within the last 2 months. He was now obtaining 25/- a week and out of this sum he had to support 4 children, so that frequently he was left without a shilling after their wants had been provided for. He had heard that if he took the child, his wife would no further trouble him. He was willing to take that course.

25 Jul 1892: FIRE AT PARNELL. A TEN-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. A fire occurred in Windsor Lane, Parnell, last night, a few minutes after 11 o'clock* resulting in the destruction of a tenroomed, one-storey house, owned and occupied by Mr Alfred J. Wadsworth. A son-in-law of Mr Wadsworth's, named Mr Francis Dickens, coal and firewood dealer, also lived on the premises. Mr Wadsworth is a cab-driver, and left home about 10 o'clock for the purpose of driving a lady into town, leaving Mr and Mrs Dickens and child in the house, and everything apparently safe. Mr Wadsworbh. returned home about eleven o'clock, and : when he got to the house he noticed that the front room, where a fire had been burning in an open fireplace all day, was in flames. He at once woke up Mr and Mrs Dickens, who were then asleep, and gave the alarm. Mr Wadsworth tried to get into the room where the fire broke out, but was driven back by the flames. The fire extended to a 4-roomed house adjoining, occupied by Mr C. Speechly, a carpenter, and owned by Mrs Mcllwraith, who resides at Litchfield, and the roof and side of the house were a good deal damaged. The origin of the fire is unknown. Mr Dickens states that he went to bed soon after 10 o'clock, and the fire was left to burn out in the front room of the house. His wife and himself were awakened by the cries of fire. Mrs Dickens had a lot of fancy paper which she kept in the fireplace, and yesterday removed it to one side of the hearth when she lit the fire. There were also a lot of feathers and toi toi grass on the mantel piece, and it is thought that a spark reached these articles and caused the fire. About a fortnight ago a fire was burning in another room in the house, when the flames got down through the bricks of the hearth and set the flooring on fire underneath, but it was put out with a few buckets of water. Mr Wadsworth purchased the destroyed house about two years ago, and had it insured for £200 in the New Zealand Insurance Company's office. The furniture was also insured in the same office for £100. The Parnell Fire Brigade were soon on the spot after the alarm was given, and it was due to their efforts that the fire did not spread. Captain Field and the Salvage Corps were also present. Constable Hobson, of the Parnell police station, Sergeant McMahon and a number of constables from , town also were at the fire.
