Historians commented on the high quality of Scottish settlers - immigrants in the 1800'a came from middle class backgrounds and by 1850, Scots made up a quarter of the populaton of New Zealand. Significant migration was caused by Canterbury's recruitment drives for Highland shepherds and gold rushes. By the 1900's in Scotland it was competition for land, jobs and housing caused in the years between 1906 and 1916 more then 16 thousand  Scots to travel to the New Zealand seeking better opportunities.
