Descendants of John Cain

Generation 1 JOHN CAIN was born 1812 in Ireland and died 1868 in Temuka. In 1838 he had married SARAH GREENLEY STEPHENSON (b: 1809, d: 1871 at Temuka) John, his wife and 3 children immigrated 1859 on the ship Clontarf***leaving Plymouth, England for Timaru, NZ.

i. SARAH CAIN, b. 2 Feb 1828; Resided 1841 Angus, Scotland; d: 1881. She mar: Alexander McBratney (b: 12 Feb 1830 Killinchey, Co Down, Nth Ireland; d: 22 Sep 1882 Arowhenue, Temuka) They immigrated 1852 on the ship 'Stag' from London, England to Lyttelton - Sarah d: 9 Jul 1881 at Temuka where she is bur. ii. JOHN Thomas CAIN, ( b. 1839 Country Down, Ireland; d. 27 Jun 1911 Waimate) Emigration: Ship "Grassmere" 1855 England to New Zealand. Mar: 1877 to BRIDGET DOWLING.

Timaru Herald 2nd Sept 1911: On Tuesday last another of the band of pioneers passed away in the person of James Cain, who had been in indifferent health for some time. He was a son of the late John Cain, of Springbank Farm, who was among the first South Canterbury settlers. He was twice married, and a widow and eleven children are left to mourn their loss.

Generation No. 2: ### SAMUEL CAIN (son of JOHN) was born 17 Oct 1848 Raffrey, County Down, Ireland, and d: 20 May 1931 at Seadown aged 82Y. Bur: 22 May 1931 Temuka Cem. Sect C Blk 2 Plot 179 Samuel Cain

Samuel left Ireland for the Colony with his parents on the "Clontarf". His father farmed land at Milford near Temuka and Samuel was brought up to farm life. He went on to purchase in 1868 a farm of 187 acres and built his residence in 1891. He also owned another farm "Laurel Grove" of 212 acres on the Seadown block. An active member of the Presbyterian Church and chairman of the Seadown School Committee since 1893. Twice married - first to Miss Eagle who died in 1890 leaving 11 children and then to his wife's sister and they had three children. Ref. Canty Cyclopedia 1902

DEATH: CAIN - On January 1st, at Waihi Farm, Temuka, the beloved wife of Mr Samuel Cain, after a very painful illness, aged 36 years.
