GEORGE ROBBINS was b: 11 Dec 1811 in Poplar, Middlesex; Bapt: 08 Jan 1812, St Ann Limehouse, Middlesex; Occupation:  Carpenter; he  d: 1858 in Marlebone, Middlesex. On 14 Sep 1834 in Thatcham, Berkshire, he married MARTHA VINCE (b: Abt. 1815 in Donnington , Berkshire, England.)

Eldest son GEORGE ROBBINS mar: ELIZABETH TAVENNER (she was b: 1828 in Somersetshire and d: Sep 1894 in Winchmore Rd, Canterbury, NZ aged 66Y. Burial: 29 Sep 1894, Ashburton Cemetery area 62 Plot No 22).

Following the death of George's father in 1856, George 27Y and Elizabeth 30y made the decision to immigrate to New Zealand  with their two children Emma 3Y and Elizabeth 1Y. (On ship's list George gave his occ: as gardener)

The sailing ship Clontarf was commissioned by the Canterbury Provincial Council for its first voyage. It left 20 Sep 1858 with 412 immigrants and arrived 105 days later at Lyttelton on 5th Jane 1859.

(This successful voyage which was not to be repeated on the Clontarf's next trip in Nov 1859 - a voyage of bad weather and disease causing the death of 41 passengers. Following this, the blighted ship  was withdrawn from immigration service.)

George saw a business opportunity to run carriers cart between Kaiapoi from there and Rangiora
