Feb 1936: THEFT CHARGE. ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE - ALLEGATION BY POLICE On
a charge of stealing a silver watch, a watch pouch and a gold ring, of a
total value of �5/14/0, the property of James Gordon Gillard, at Otahuhu
on Jan 18, Leslie Wilfred Guilford aged 30, appeared in the Police
Court this morning. Said the senior detective. "This man was arrested at
Maramarua, and on arrival at the Auckland railway station yesterday he
made a determined effort to escape from his escort." Bail fixed at �100.

HAND BEFORE COURT PROBATION FOR TWO YEARS A farm hand, Leslie Wilfred
Guilford aged 30, appeared before Mr. Justice Fair for sentence on one
charge of theft from a dwelling and on two charges of theft. In a note
handed to the registrar, prisoner said he had been in prison for three
weeks awaiting his trial, and had given the police every assistance. His
Honor said that prisoner Leslie Wilfred Guilford, aged 30, farm hand,
had made a written statement pleading guilty to one charge of
theft from a dwelling and two charges of theft and said that Guilford claimed that he
had assisted the police by admitting the offences after witnesses
had failed to identify him as the culprit, and also that his
last charge was June 1925 and asked for "a chance to go straight".
Prisoner would be admitted to probation for a term of two
years.

Wairarapa Age, 23 July 1913: At a special meeting of the
committee of the Masterton District High school last evenmg, Mr Joseph
Stevenson was appointed custodian and school cleaner. There were thirty
one applicants for the position.
Wairarapa Daily Times, 28 Sept 1917; Joseph Stevenson was
ordered by Mr L. G. Roid, S.M., at the Masterton S.M. Court this morning,
to contribute 5s per week towards the support of his son (Leslie) an
inmate of the Weraroa Boys' Training Farm .
Wairarapa Daily Times, 6 Feb 1919: SEPARATION ORDER:
STEVENSON v STEVENSON. In the Magistrate's Court at Masterton this
morning, Catherine Stevenson granted a separation order from her
husband, Joseph Stevenson of Masterton, labourer, on the grounds
of persistent cruelty. Mrs Stevenson was granted �2 a week maintenance, on
condition that she maintains the children and �3 for past maintenance.
Defendant was also ordered to pay �2 2s counsel's fee.
Wairarapa Daily Times, 3 Oct 1919: Joseph Stevenson was
charged at the Masterton Police Court this morning with not locking the
wheel of his delivery cart when he left is standing, with the result that
the horses bolted and caused a sensation by scattering jars of beer. The
offence was a breach of the by-laws. Defendant, who did not appear, was
fined 10s and 7s costs.
