Cliff  went to school at Opunake and was a Farm Assistant at Pihama with his father George. Pihama when called up for Military service. He became a Linesman with the P&T  and married  on 28 Jan 1926 to Elsie Frances Manning b: 24 Jul 1897 (Parents Michael Raphael and Agnes Manning) d: 17 Aug 1988.  Their children:
