York and Lancaster Regiment (“Royal Tigers”) or better known in New
Zealand as the “Hickety Pips” which was the nearest the Maoris could get
to 65th, was in New Zealand for just over 18 years, between 1846–65, as
the 65th (2nd Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment. The regiment arrived in
three detachments. The first under the command of Major Wyatt, with about
550 all ranks, landed on 19 November 1846 at Russell; the second, under
the command of Capt. O'Connell, on 1 August 1846, at Wellington; the
third, under the command of Lt.-Col. Gold, mainly wives and children, on
14 January 1847, at Auckland. Commanded by Lt.-Col. C. E. Gold, and later
by Col. A. F. W. Wyatt, C.B. “New Zealand” worn on battle honours. The
Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington's Own) is
allied. Private Henry
Hughes with wife Winifred travelled with the 65th regiment
aboard the convict ship "Pestonjee Bomanjee" as a guard. The ship departed
Gravesend 26 August 1845, arrived at Sydney on 12 January 1846 after
disembarking convicts at Hobart Town; notes - convict ship, source - DNZ,
Broughton; passengers – 65th - 1 officer, 2 sergeants, 47 rank and file.
He may then have been transferred to the barque "Levant" bound for Wellington commanded by Capt.
Lane and the ship's doctor was Doctor Knox. The 390 tons ship departed
Sydney 7 July 1846 and arrived at Wellington's Port Nicholson on 22 July
1846, carrying the 65th and 58th regiments and passengers. Apart from two
Captains and two Lieutenants and a number of others associated with the
Regiments, it carried eight sergeants, seven corporals, and one hundred

Henry Hughes, for drunkenness, was reprimanded and discharged on payment of costs of information and summons.Report: Evening Post, 19 Oct. 1869: A case of awfully sudden death occurred this morning about 10 o'clock. A man named Hughes, apparently in his usual health, was walking along in front of the watermen's "gridiron," when he suddenly dropped, and on being picked up was found to be quite dead. He was carried into the Pier Hotel, and efforts at resuscitation made, but he never showed a sign of life after he fell. Had a bullet passed through his brain, death could not have been more instantaneous. Heart disease was the cause of death." He was taken to be identified into the Crown and Anchor Hotel. Verdict of the Inquisition taken at the Crown and Anchor Inn on 19 Oct. 1869 upon the view of the body of Henry Hughes then and there lying dead and upon the oaths of ... various, including John Prosser, Proprietor of the Crown and Badger... "That the said Henry Hughes on the 19th day of October in the year aforesaid Colony, and for some time previous did suffer from a mortal disease, to wit, ossification of the valves of the heart, of the said mortal disease he did there and then instantly die, and we, the aforesaid Jurors do say that the said Henry Hughes in the manner and by means aforesaid in a natural way did die." performed the funeral rites of the Holy Catholic Church on the body of
HENRY HUGHES who died suddenly on the 19th instant at the age of 57 years.

baptised in the Catholic Chapel, St Mary of the Angels, Boulcott St. This
was built in 1843 by Father O'Reily a Franciscan, who arrived in 1843 (the
