c Jane Hamill b: 1881 d Samuel Hamill: b: 1881 d: 06 Jan 1902 in Wairaurauhiri "Word was received in Orepuki on Wednesday that a man named Sam Hamill had been drowned in the Wairaurauhiri, about 3.1 miles west of the Waiau. It is a fairly large stream, and has a very rapid current near the mouth, especially at ebb tide. It appears that the deceased and some others were fishing near the mouth, when Hamill got into deep water and was swept away by the current and drowned. His body was recovered about two hours after the accident. Constable Ferguson and a party have gone to bring the body to Oropuki. They drove to Waiau, but beyond that the road is unfit for horse traffic, so the journey will have to be made on foot, and the body carried to Waiau, when a trap will meet them. Writing on Monday to his brother, Mr Leo. Otway, who was with Mr Lilliecrona's survey party, to which the deceased was attached, gave tho following account of the accident "Lillliecrona and myself had a very sad experience to-day. We went out fishing this morning with S. Hamill, one of Lilhecronas hands, and when returning with a good haul of fish the boat got capsized somehow half a mile or more from the shore and poor Hamill was drowned. Lilliecrona and myself got ashore after a terrible fight, in a very exhausted condition. We recovered tho body some two hours afterwards, washed up at the mouth of the river, and with Philip's help carried it to the Pataka Lilliecrona has reported the matter to the police and the Chief Surveyor. Hamill was 22 years of age, and he could not swim. He was the son of Mr J. Hamill, of Teramika, and formerly resident at West Plains. It is expected that two or three days will elapse before the party which has gone out returns." e Christina Hamill (b: 1883 d: 1945) Mar: 1914 to Richard John Foley (b. 1885, d. 1958) Death - Hamill.
