The name was listed as OSIOWSKI on the Hamburg passenger lists when they came over in 1875. Head of family, Martin Ossowski was a farm labourer and born in 1824 in Prussia and died on 7 November 1892 at Carterton Wairarapa, aged about 68. There were wars against Denmark in 1864, Austria in 1866, and France 1870-1871 until unification of the German Empire in 1871 under Prussian Rule. During this period of the Franco/Prussian War life for Poles under the Prussian/German rule was difficult. The Polish/German settlers then were taken on the ship Waipara to Jackson Bay on the remote South Westland Coast, as such immigrants were not well liked or treated well. They refused to leave the ship at Jackson Bay and were brought back to Hokitika (5 Feb 1876), where they settled. Force was used in trying to get the immigrants to settle in Jackson Bay, a remote and inhospitable place with mosquitos and poor unproductive land. Some did settle there but they eventually left to settle in Taranaki and elsewhere. There was a government enquiry into the treatment of these settlers as they were classed as German convicts.Martin settled in the Wairarapa and here son Frank attended first the Greytown School in 1883 and then the family moved to Carterton in 1886. The public examination of John Prosser, of Stratford, hotelkeeper, bankrupt, was held. Mr Welsh appeared for the D.0.A., and Mr Scott- Smith for the bankrupt. The debtor gave particulars of his dealings with his son-in-law Ofsofke. He said : "I have not a sixpence, and can't make my creditors any offer." Frank Ofsofke, son-in-law of bankrupt, stated that he lent bankrupt £347 of his own money. The bankrupt still owes him the money, but he would give up all his claim against Mr Prosser and the estate for the money he lent him. 1894 Hawera & Normanby Star, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31st. Caplen v.
