Mary Blanche* Hursthouse was b: 12 Jul 1839 in Norwich, Norfolk, England to parents John and Helen Hursthouse; she d: 26 Nov 1864 in New Plymouth Bur: Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth. She mar: 18 Dec 1858 in St Mary's Church, New Plymouth to Henry Robert Richmond (b: 15 Jun 1829 in London son of Christopher Richmond, (1785 - 1832) and Maria Lely Richmond (1791 - 1872); he d: 08 Dec 1890 at 175 Worcester street, Christchurch) Henry Robert Richmond arrived in Taranaki from Auckland in 1852. After settling in New Plymouth he became involved in the town's political and social activities. In 1865 he was elected Superintendent of Taranaki, a position he held until 1869. He acted briefly as schoolmaster before turning to a career in law. He qualified as a barrister and solicitor and practised in New Plymouth up until his death in 1891. Richmond, has passed her B.A. degree. Auckland Star, 23 Oct 1905: Mrs H. R, Richmond and daughters, of Wellington, have just returned to London from spending a summer in Belgium. Mr Bernard Crompton Smith, solicitor, of Wellington, who has decided to practise his profession m that town, was trained in the office of Messrs Martin and Atkinson, of Wellington, whose senior partner is one of the leading authorities on local government law in New Ze-a- Ijmd, and whose books on that and other legal subjects are known throughout the country. Mr Smith is a nephew of Mr Stephenson Smith, of Blenheim, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and is son of Mr Percy Smith, of Now Plymouth, late Surveyor-General, the widely-known authority on Maori, his history and traditions.
