Michael (Mick) Horgan was b: 30 Dec 1882 in Tai Tapu, Canterbury to parents Mary and Michael Horgan. He attended the Tai Tapu school, Canterbury until Sep 1890 when the family were at Lake Flat before moving to Taranaki. On 16 Oct 1893 Mick was enrolled at the Pihama School. He mar: 18 Jul 1906 at Eltham to Monica Mary Johanna Brick who was b. 29 Dec 1884 to parents William Brick and Emma Josephine nee Kennedy.

The Horgans were living at Otekeho when the influenza epidemic struck both parents - Monica Horgan died 25 Nov 1918 aged 34Y

Hospital Report: Hawera & Normanby Star, 26 November 1918: THE POSITION AT MANAIA.There have been 29 patients received into hospital since it was established (including three yesterday). Six have been sent out convalescent, six have died, and 17 remain, two cases being very serious. Included in the list of deaths is Mrs Michael Horgan, of Otakeho, died 25 Nov 1918 who leaves a husband (a patient in hospital) and six children, from two to ten years old.
