Samuel Joll Born:
1805 in Calstock, Cornwall, England and died 20 Jun 1879 in New Plymouth
(Burial: Te Henui Cemetery, New Plymouth (Row 13 Plot 741.) He
married 16 May 1829 in Calstock, Cornwall to Elizabeth Vanderband Treliving who was born abt.
1808. They boarded the "Timandra" a voyage of 113 days (ships list) with their 5 children and
arrived 23 Feb 1842. Samuel cleared their 10 acre farm at Omata, transported goods for income
and later had sections at Bell Block in New
Plymouth. Five
more children were born. Elizabeth died 15 July 1882

JOLL was born 21 Jun 1830 in Calstock,
Cornwall. She married: 26 Dec 1850 in Wesleyan Chapel, New Plymouth and
died 14 Aug 1898 in Motueka, Nelson where she is buried at the
Motueka Cemetery. Her husband Albert
Frederick William Wills was born 01 Aug 1823 Calstock, Cornwall
(Father James William Wills; Mother Betsy Brooming Rickard) - his family
also arrived on the Timandra. A farmer, he died 24 Sep 1896 Holstein
Farm, Wills Road, Upper Moutere, Tasman. The family had farmed at Bell
Block until the start of the Maori Wars in March 1860 and they were forced
to evacuate to New Plymouth then in August 1860 the family resettled
to Nelson where they farmed at Upper Moutere. Below, the Wills

2 SAMUEL
JOLL was born
1832 in Calstock, Cornwall and aged 10 yrs on arrival . He served in the
Taranaki Bushranger volunteers against the Maoris in the sixties (he was
awarded the New Zealand Medal for service under Fire) The lure of
gold took him to Ballarat and Bendigo where he had little
luck and then with wagon and bullock team did a roaring trade transporting
supplies to diggers on the goldfields.(Source -Taranaki Cyclopedia.)
Samuel returned to Taranaki where he married on 10 Jun
1857 at New Plymouth to Elizabeth Langdon Jonas, daughter of Matthew
and Elizabeth Jonas. Elizabeth was born abt. 1837 and the Jonas
family emigrated 1841 aboard the "Oriental". Samuel Joll died on 13 Sep 1899
in Waitara, Elizabeth died 5 Sep 1908 in Waitara - Joll
Plot 372. They had thirteen children:
i Harry
Treliving Joll - Born 17 Mar 1858 in Riverdale Farm, Waitara, Taranaki.
In 1884 he married Alison Shearer. He took up land first at
Waitara where he was a member of the Waitara School Committee and a
director of the Waitara Freezing Works, and then near Hawera where they
spent some years, before returning to New Plymouth and finally
settled in Auckland
where he managed a business for Hellabys until his death in 1933. Their

iv Eva Jane Joll was born 13 Nov 1862 in
New Plymouth. She married Apr 1892 in New Plymouth to Matthew
Thomas Drown, the son of Richard Drown and Frances Smale and was
born April 8, 1858 in Pillaton, Cornwall, England. In April 7,
1873 he emigrated to Australia and in 1884, resettled in Hastings,
N Z where he was an orchardist and died there in 1953. Eva (she
died 12 Oct 1916) and Matthew had two sons

Storekeeper and General Merchant, Waitara. This business had been
established originally in 1879, and later, for many years was
operated in partnership by Herbert and his brother, Harry who was
by 1906 farming in the district. The firm imported the first goods
shipped direct from London to Waitara and was agent for the
Commercial Insurance. Herbert married Fanny Beeby Biss in
1901 She was born in 5 Sept.1872 at Nelson (Father William Morore
Biss; Mother Louisa Hooper) Fanny died 1946. Herbert retired
to Auckland and died 1954 aged 84 years. Their daughter Ruth
