The Company's depot, on Church Hill, was a tent, and was filled to overflowing by the emigrants from the "Fifeshire," so that when the "Mary Anne" arrived at Nelson, her passengers had to camp out the best way they could. A few sticks with a blanket stretched over them formed the connubial apartment of new settler Thomas and his wife Elizabeth, and their bedding was thick, close, dry fern, on the night of their arrival - luckily the weather was fine, and they did not fare so badly.

The numerous friends of the happy couple were entertained at afternoon tea, when the Rev. O. K. Hewlett proposed the health of the bride, which was heartily responded to. The bridegroom proposed the bridesmaid, and the best man replied. The health of Mr and Mrs Tidd and Mr William Douglas were duly proposed and responded to. The wedding cake was cut and dispensed by Miss Prosser. The bride and bridegroom were the recipients of many handsome and useful presents. Later on in the evening the happy couple retired to their home, a new house prettily situated on the terrace which forms part of the "Arthur Estate," leaving the others to enjoy a pleasant dance in the room popularly known as Tidd's Ranfurly Hall.
