29 Apr 1866: The rain of last night and this morning has doubtless caused much damage. By nine o'clock a.m., the Hutt River had spread across the street, and was encroaching on the bars and premises of the several hotels. The mail from the Upper Hutt had not arrived when Death's bus left Whitewood's, although the driver waited 20 minutes for it. There were also several severe land slips between Kaiwaira-warra and the Hutt, which were speedily attended to by the roadsmen. The first of Cobb & Co.'s tri-weekly coaches left for the Wairarapa this morning but, owing to the weather, we scarcely expect that she will reach Masterton - neither do we think it likely that the mail due from there this evening will put in an appearance

5 Feb 1877  As the time of high water last night, some fears were entertained that the Hutt river might be backed up so as to overflow its banks, and as a precautionary measure some of those in charge of horses entered for the races had the animals removed to the vicinity of the railway station. They were, however, fortunately mistaken in their calculations, the rise in the river not having been of such dimensions as was expected from the weather appearances. There are now twenty-four horses stabled at Valentine's and Whitewood's at the Hutt, with an equal number of jockeys, domiciled in hotels in readiness for the race-meeting, and the number is expected to be increased this evening by two other arrivals from the Wairarapa.

The Central Hotel was built in 1880 on the site of Whitewood's Hotel, built in 1847.
