Christopher's grandparents, William Rowlands (b: 27 Aug 1791 in Knighton, Radnorshire, Wales, occ: Goldsmith;  d: 22 Sep 1868 in Hastings Sussex) and mother Emma Cobden (b: 1796 in Chichester, Sussex, d: Dec 1829 in Clerkenwell, London - they had mar: 04 Jul 1816 in Chelsea St Luke, Middlesex, England)  1841 Census:

Early Dec 1841 Wm Rowlands (Jnr) came to NZ arriving at Wellingtonaged 21 and d: 05 May 1879 in Melbourne where he is buried, aged 58Y. Wairarapa Standard; 31 May 1879: "We regret to notice the death at Wellington of a very old Wellington settler, Mr William Rowlands, aged 50 years. Mr Rowlands left Wellington a few months ago in consequence of failing health. He leaves a a widow and a large family, all resident in Wellington."

William Rowlands married 01 May 1847 in Wellington to Mary Bell - her parents were William Bell (b: 31 Oct 1801 in Wakefield, Yorkshire; Died: 02 Jan 1855 in Porirua, Wellington) He mar: (1) 10 Jul 1825 in Birstall, Yorkshire  to Margaret Dove (Born: 1802; Died: Bef. 1835) Their children were: 

i Ann Bell (b: 1826 in Wakefield, Yorkshire; Mar: 14 Jul 1845 in Thorden Chapel, Wellington to George Levy

ii Mary Bell (b: 17 Jan 1829 in Yorkshire, England Died: 26 Apr 1906 in Paekakariki, Wellington 76Y Burial: 27 Apr 1906 Karori Cemetery, Wellington) mar: William Rowlands

iii George Bell (b: 18 May 1831 in Halifax, Yorkshire; Died: 18 Dec 1904 in Otaki, Wellington 75y )

iv Sarah Bell (b: 10 Jun 1834 in Halifax, Yorkshire, Died: 25 Apr 1916 in Makino, Wellington 82Y) Landed in Wellington when a child. She for many years resided in Johnsonville and participated in the ups and downs of pioneer life. She was in that locality when the Maori War broke out but afterwards went to Otaki where she resided for some 30 years. Miss Bell lived 10 years at Woodville and then returned to Otaki where her funeral took place. 1841 Census

Mary's father William Bell remarried 06 Sep 1835 in Birstall, Yorkshire to widow Hannah Furness nee King (b: Abt. 1800; d: 02 Jan 1855 in Porirua, Wellington) Her daughter was  Sarah Jane Furness (b: 01 May 1835 in Halifax Nth Gate End, Yorkshire, England

William and Hannah were 39Y when the family joined 234 immigrants  at London leaving on 13th Oct 1841 on the barque, the "Birman" to NZ with Mary aged 13Y and siblings Ann, 16Y, Sarah Jane Furness 12Y, George 10Y and Sarah 7Y;  They arrived at Wellingon 1st Mar 1842 and the family lived at Johsonville and by 1852, landowner on the Porirua Road where his dairy herd supplied milk to settlers..

1 Mary Elizabeth Rowlands (b: 20 March 1848, bapt: 7 April; d: 1932 in Wellington.) She  mar: 1876 Rev John Moir. In 1851 a group of Wellington Scots petitioned the Free Church of Scotland asking an ordained minister be sent and the Rev John Moir arrived 3 Nov 1853 to be minister of the second Presbyterian Church (now St Johns).

2 William Rowlands (Born: 19 Mar 1850 in Wellington Died: 06 Jan 1909 in Palmerston Nth) Married: 27 Jun 1894 in St John's Church, Johnsonville to Emily Theresa Bannister (b: 11 May 1871 to parents Edwin (1827 - 1895) and Mary Tutchen Bannister (1829 - 1917); Emily d: 02 May 1939 in Palmerston Nth.

The many friends of Mr William Rowlands, an old and respected resident of this district, will regret to hear of his death which took place yesterday. The late Mr Rowlands had been suffering for a considerable period from a painful disease, and he had become so weak that his demise was not unexpected. he had resided in the district for 20 years. He had a farm at Tiritea, Fitzherbert West from which he retired about 2 years ago and came to live in Palmerston but was unable to enjoy his retirement very much on account of illhealth. He leaves a widow and 4 chilldren

3 Harriet Rowlands (Born: 08 Apr 1852 in Wellington; Died: 29 Mar 1879  27Y)  Married: 11 Jun 1877 in St Marks Church, Wellington to Henry Charles Cheesman (b: 1 Oct 1849 Wellington to Father: Robert Suckling Cheesman (1803 - 1879) and mother Ann nee Graham (b: 1812 - ?); he d: 30 Dec 1895 in Samoa).

A meeting of the creditors of Henry Charles Cheesman described as a clerk were held in the Supreme Court 28 March 1882 and was the result of a petition lodged by certain creditors of the debtor. He had for a number of years past been employed in the Civil Service in the Deeds Registration Department and left suddenly for Sydney a few weeks ago. Proofs of debt were handed in to the amount of £430 13s 2d - the principal creditor being Mr Christopher Rolands (£171 18d 2d)Mr Edwards said there was an assett in the estate of a will of a mr Graham, a relative, worth abt £800 which if secured would cover the claims put in and leave a substantial surplus beside. It was possible Mr Cheesman was making for England as fast as he could in order to secure it for himself. There was to be ongoing investigation and the meeting closed.

At the age of 43 years, Christopher Rowlands married: 03 Mar 1897 to Elizabeth Ophelia Isabella Tidd (Born: 15 Jun 1852 in Stoke, Nelson - her father: Thomas Samuel Tidd and mother: Elizabeth Eyles; she d: 25 Dec 1934 in Opunake, Taranaki ; Burial: Opunake Cemetery, Taranaki )

Christopher was a Watchmaker and Jeweller in the main street of Opunake where Elizabeth's son Claude Thomas was an apprentice from 1898. In 1903 Claude took over Christopher's business with his brother Rowley (Rowland Tidd Prosser), they called it Prosser Brothers

22 Sep 1903 Opunake Times: Messrs Prosser Bros notify that they have opened up business as jewellers in the premises lately occupied by Mr C Rowlands they have on view a very nicely assorted stock of watches, brooches, rings, clocks, etc. We wish them every success in their venture.
