Andrew was at one time a member of the Balclutha School Committee, and was Chairman of the Kakapuawaka School Committee. He belonged to the Wesleyan Church, and was one of the trustees of the congregation of that body here. He was a quiet, respectable man, a good and obliging neighbour, and kindly in all his social relations. His funeral, which took place on Wednesday, was very largely attended. After his death, widow Elizabeth said to be "a fine hearty type of woman, with a kind word, a cheery greeting, and a hospitable home" lived with her daughter Mrs Jefferis until her death. Notes: 14 April 1893: What might have proved a fatal accident happened to Andrew Chirnside on Friday morning last. While putting a cover on a horse, it kicked him on the face, breaking his nose and otherwise seriously injuring him. "We are glad to hear that he is now progressing favourably under the care of Dr Campbell. 13 December 1901 Andrew Chirnside, worked for Muir and Burley on a contract to lift eight miles of tramway at Owaka - he had to supply the horses 8 July 1904 A rather nasty accident happened at
mid-day tn Wednesday to Mr Andrew Chirnside. who is employed at Mr
Soper's, Te Houka. He had unyoked and stabled the horses, and, after
feeding them, was passing behind one of them, when suddenly it kicked out,
and hit him with tremendous force on his back, sending him right out
through the stable on to the ground outside, where he lay helpless, until
a quarter of an hour afterwards when Mr Sopor and Mr M. Dalgleish found
him lying there. He was conveyed inside, when medical attendance was
procured. He suffers great pain on the slightest attempt at movement, but
is hoped that with perfect rest for some time he will recover with no
ill-erects. The horse is a very quiet one, and Mr Chirnside thinks he must
have accidentally touched the horse on the hocks with the feed-bucket when
passing.
