Otago Witness , 18 Feb 1882 On the 9th a
small wooden building belonging to Mr Robert Paterson, of Hillend, and
situated at Mount Stuart, was destroyed by fire. It had been erected for
the accommodation of the men working on the property, and was occupied at
the time by Thomas and Manly Hitchon, sons of Mr Hitchon, storekeeper, of
Adam's Flat. The fire probably originated from some ashes which were left
in the fireplace when the occupants went to work in the morning, and broke
out about 10 o'clock. The Hitchons lost all their personal property,
amounting jointly to £60 worth, and the value of the building would be
about £30.
Otago Witness , 11 April 1889: Oats.— ln the
fore part of the week the demand was exceptionally good, as arrivals were
only meeting the demand, and as a result we sold several lines
viz., T. and M. Hitchon, Waiwera, at 2s 8 1/2d. Locally the demand
continues very good, as millers are taking orders for oatmeal pretty
freely, but the present high rates of oats are complained of by them as
prohibitory.

Otago Witness, 12 March 1891: WEDDING BELLS AT TE HOUKA. A stranger to the district on the 27th ult. would probably have wondered to see so many folk making the same way in the same direction. Nothing less than the wedding of a much respected couple was the explanation - Miss Jeffries being married to Mr Manly Hitchon. The bride looked charming in a lovely gown of cream striped satin with wreath and veil. She was attended by two bridesmaids - Miss L. Jeffries (sister to the bride) and Miss McLay (her cousin). They were nicely dressed in pink nun's veiling very prettily- made. Mr T Hitchon acted as groomsman. Mr and Mrs Jeffries did everything to promote the comfort of their numerous guests. The dinner was laid in the barn with great taste and elegance, and every dainty in season found a place on the hospitable board. Mrs Jeffries, mother of the bride, was dressed in black silk; Mrs M'Lay, black lace dress; Mrs Henry Hitchon, cardinal silk dress with white plush vest; Mrs Hitchon, sen., black cashmere; Mrs McKay and Mrs Moffat, black dresses ; Mrs J. Dallas, grey silk dress with velvet sleeves; Mrs Walker, black dress with red ribbons. The young ladies were nearly all in white embroidered dresses with different coloured sashes, and such a lot of pretty girls as were gathered together are not to be seen every day. A most enjoyable evening was spent in singing and dancing, and everyone regretted when daylight made its appearance. The happy couple have gone to spend their honeymoon at the Lakes. Manly Hitchon was b: 03 Apr 1862 in Gossiping Gully, Taradale, Victoria, to Kidderminster-born Henry Horton Hitchon (1833 - 1892) and mother Jane nee Bennet (1830-1916) His parents mar: in England in 1857 and 1859, went to Taradale, Victoria, Australia and then to the Milton area, NZ in 1865 where Henry was storekeeper and postmaster at Adams Flat.
Manly was a farmer at Waiwera in the Clutha electorate which is close to Te Houka where Benjamin James Jefferis had his farm.
