Lucy Jefferis (b: 1843 in Keynsham, Somerset, England, dau: of John Jefferis and Ann nee Hall; Bapt: 01 Jan 1843 St Nicholas, Whitchurch, Somerset, England; d: 27 Dec 1929 in Rotorua )

Lucy Jefferies established a private school in North Taieri, Otago  in 1858.

29 Oct 1859 - letter from Lucy Jefferies to her uncle talks of the sinking of the Henbury, and of serious fires in Port Chalmers and the flour mills of the town. She also discusses farm life, her school, the price of foodstuffs in Dunedin and her father's birthday party.

Three major types of education which were practised on the Taieri in the period 1856-1860 up to 1870. The earliest stage, home tutoring, occurred from 1848 onwards and continued to play an important part wherever there was no formal school available. In 1856 the West Taieri schoolhouse was established but  distance for many, poor roading and demands of farming made attendance almost impossible for children and equal educational opportunities did not to reach the more isolated areas of the Taieri. The second stage was that of teaching groups of pupils in a private school. In the building which became Jefferis Race-Course Hotel of the l860s, Lucy Jefferis taught up to twelve local children. She kept poor health and was not trained in any manner for teaching.  Her school was closed in 1860 when Lucy married.

Ref: The history of the Taieri Plains, "Tales of the Years that are Gone", this is written of the first school in the area. "Lucy Jefferis one of the pioneers conducted a small private school for a time in the Racecourse Hotel - her family's residence, for the children who were unable to attend East Taieri school due to distance, and lack of road and bridges." The school was closed in 1860 .

Lucy was 18 when she mar. 1860 in Dunedin William Alfred Young (b: 15 Jun 1831 in Kent; d: 17 Jan 1885 in Shag Valley aged 53Y)
