Emerson (b: 11 May 1905 in Oamaru to parents George Emerson and Janet nee

Oamaru)
George attended
Westson School gaining his Certificate of Proficiency at age 13 yrs 2 mths
and then went on to Waitaki Boys High School.
George and Olive
lived for many years at Pukeuri, finally shifting to Oamaru in 1959.
He worked as a labourer for Doug Paton (they also rented his house).George
was a member of the Pukeuri School Committee for a number of years at
one stage holding the position as secretary. After working for
Mr Paton, George went to the Pukeuri Freezing Works where he was a
night watchman and gardener. He was also for a time working on the
temporary staff of the Railways but was unable as he was
colour-blind, to get a permanent position. A very keen gardener, George
had two large gardens on his property on Thames Highway. Both George and
Olive's main interest was following the sporting interests of their
children.
George and
Olive celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with an evening dance in
Oamaru on 22 Oct 1977 where many members of their family were able to
attend. Even though they had a large family of their own, if visitors
arrived around meal times, Olive was still able to produce enough food for
all - nobody ever went away hungry.

the Freezing Works ending up in the shop there. His next employment was at
Wrightsons and finally at the Woollen Mills.
George played
football for "Old Boys" and Maheno during his playing days, having to bike
15 milles twice a week to training and again on Saturday to the game. He
also played cricket and for a while owned a racing bike.
George coached football (under 19's) for many years and also coached
his sons. Interests included being a member of the Oamaru Club for many
