Richard was employed by the County Council as a bushman at Raetihi. He was not quite 20 Yrs of age when he enlisted for WW1 military at Wanganui on the 15th Nov 1915. (He gave his grandfather's name "James Bruce" as his own at his medical and next of kin as his father Alfred Pelvin, Address: Mill Road Waimate.)

After the initial military training, he left New Zealand 4 Mar 1916 with the NZ Expeditionary Force - his Unit, the 10th Reinforcements Wellington Infantry Battalion, B Company. They dis-embarked at Suez, Egypt on 10 April 1916 and were transhipped from there to Etaples, France. He was a driver with the NZ Field Artillery. He became ill in July 1916, and was invalided for a period at the London Chelsea Hospital. View Dick's military service record here.

Dick left for NZ from Liverpool on the "SS Kia Ora" on 27 Mar 1919, a service of 3 yrs 69 days and was discharged from the Army on 16 June 1919.

1922: Dick lived at 12 Grace St, Waimate and was working as a railway surfaceman
