From newspaper cuttings she learnt that Alfred George Beake had asked that son Alfie not be sent to the war as he was needed at their bakery. He already had two sons, Walter and Will, discharged on medical grounds after the Battle of Ypres - son Walter had shellshock after being buried alive. Alfie's call up was given a six month suspension and in 1917 or 1918 he joined and died in Ireland a year later. Contact Catharine if you can help with her research. |
