Rodney was apprenticed to Cozens and Black (Engineers) in 1901, aged 16 years and remained with them as a pattern maker until 1917.

Evening Star, 21 Aug 1918: MOANA LAWN TENNIS CLUB  The committee congratulate members on having experienced another successful year. The attendance, had been as good as could be expected, considering  many members are on active service. During the year Mr R. H. Jefferis, treasurer of the club, and one of the original members, left for the North to take up pastoral pursuits. (member before 1913)

Oamaru Mail, 3 Jul 1920: The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., will offer, on account of Messrs Jefferis Bros., Otekaike, at the Duntroon Yards on Wednesday, 14th July, 12 tip-top working draught mares and geldings from five to 10 years old. These are the contracting teams, and are straight out of hard work.

Rodney, his wife Eva, and daughter Mary, then moved to Kaitaia to farm and Rowland and Gordon were born there. After seven years in Northland they returned south and took over Rowland's orchard at Otiake.

Rodney retired to Gore about 1955, and later to Dunedin
