John Cleland  (Waimairi councilor 2nd from left above) was b: 20 Apr 1861 in Ireland; d: 24 Feb 1947 aged 86Y; Bur: 26 Feb 1940 Belfast Cem. Blk B, No. 40 John arr: New Zealand in 1879 on the ship Crusader. The Star; Thurs Sept 25th 1879 - tenth voyage; Messrs Shaw, Savill and Co.'s favourite ship the Crusader, Captain Llewellyn Davies, arrived from London, yesterday morning after a passage of 92 days with 214 passengers. Left East Indian Docks on June 21 and towed down to Greenhithe, where the compasses were adjusted, the emigration surveyor being on board. Towed to Gravesend, where the remainder of the passengers embarked, and after being cleared by the medical officer, slipped from the bouys at 8 p.m. and towed as far as the Nore - next day towed to the Downs and June 23, weighed anchor and proceeded to work down the Channel under sail. Sighted Akaroa Head at on Sept. 22, and sailed around the Peninsula. Anchored at midnight in McIntosh Bay, in 16 fathoms of water. Got under weigh again next morning when the cable parted, and one side of the windlass smashed. Took the pilot aboard at 2 a.m. yesterday and was taken in tow by the p.s.
