1 Lt General John Wynyard (b: 1682 Westminster, London; d: 20 Feb 1752 aged 70Y, bur; Westminster Abbey, London) He was an officer of the British Army. In 1703 he was made Captain-lietenant of Roger Elliott's regiment of Foot and was regimental Adjutant, He was commander in Chief at Gibralter and Port Mahon. In 1709 when he was on recruiting service in England. He mar abt 1729 to Mary Maxwell - she d: 1775. Their 3 children - Mary West (b: Wynyard); Emily Wynyard and son William (2 below)

... 2  Lt General  William Wynyard (b: 1732 in Minorca, Balearic Islands, Spain; d: 25 Jan 1768) mar: Mary Sophia Otway (1724-1757) with whom he has a daughter, He mar 1758 Catherine St Leger (b: 05 Jun 1736 in Inistidge, County Kilkenny, Ireland; d: 17 May 1764 in England  - they had 4 children (Wm below) and mar 1768 to Sarah Lilley (b 1750) with whom he had 6 children.

He was educated at Westminster School and 1748 joined the army as an ensign with the 17th Foot. He reached the rank of Lt-General when he died and King George 3 granted his widow a payment of £200 in 1790 "for her husband's long and faithful services in Our Army'

......... 3 William Wynyard (b: 20 Jun 1759 in Windsor Castle, Berkshire, UK; d: 11 Jul 1819 in England) He was commissioned as an Ensign 1775. In 1777 he was severely wounded in the Battle of Brandywine  in the American Revolutionary War. In 1799 he became a commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion of the Coldstream Guards, then was Colonel of the West India Rangers in 1806 and Colonel of the 5th Regimant of Foot from 1812 until death.

He  mar: Abt. 1787 in Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England to Jane Gladwin, Lady in Waiting to Queen Charlotte and had 4 children - one son Edward Buckley Wynyard became a full general in the Army  along with his brother Rbt Henry below.

Robert served from 1828 to 1841 in Ireland  and in 1842 he returned to England to command the 58th regiment and was promted to Lieutenant General. In 1844 the regiment was posted to Sydney where, shortly after his arrival, he was ordered to New Zealand with 200 troops to augment the forces deployed in the Bay of Oslands against Hone Heke and Kawiti.

He became a Major General and Governor of New Ulster, an early province of New Zealand and is regarded as one of the founders of New Zealand - he did paintings of Auckland.  Ill health saw him return to England  and after his death,  his wife returned to NZ until her death  02 Nov 1881 in Auckland; Bur: 02 Nov 1881 St Andrews Church, Epsom, Auckland.

DEATH: On November 20, at Auckland Robert McDonnell, beloved husband of Gertrude M. Wynyard,and youngest son of the late Major General Robert Henry Wynyard, C.B., of the 8Sth P.egimeni, aged 59 years. The funeral will leave his late residence, One Tree Hill, Epsom, for the St. Andrew's Cemetery. Epsom, tomorrow (Friday), 23rd Nov., at 2 p.m.
Robert was grandson of General E. C. Wynyard, of the Coldstream Guards, and son of Major General Robert Henry Wynyard, C.B., of the 58th Regiment. He was only an infant of two years old when the regiment landed in New Zealand in 1845 for the protection of the infant colony, and he spent all his boyhood and received his education in Auckland. He accompanied his father General (then Colonel) Wynyard with the regiment in 1858 for the Cape of Good Hope Colony where his father had been appointed commander of the forces.

 Returning to England in 1863, Robert McDonnell Wynyard married the daughter of Major England, of Bath, and on his father's death in 1863, came out to New Zealand with his wife and mother the same year., to Auckland, where he settled at One-tree Hill, and has ever since resided there. He was a favourite with and is well remembered by.those old soldiers of the "Black Cuffs" who are still living in the colony.  On arrival here he purchased a property at One Tree Hill, adjoining the present Cornwall Golf Links where he has since resided. In 1871 his brother, Major Goodwin Wynyard also settled in NZ - he died at Devonport, North Shore. Robert Wynyard leaves his widow and a grown, up family (one daughter and three sons) to mourn their loss. The deceased gentleman was a keen sportsman, and one of the best shots in the field in the good old days. His hunter, "Cocky," was one of the best horses that have ever followed the Pakuranga hounds while his keen interest in the Auckland Racing Club, and his gratuity services as honorary starter in the early days of the club were acknowledged by his election as a life member of the club. He was always of a generous, kindly disposition, and wil be much missed by his numerous friends. The funeral takes place at 2 p.m.(Friday), leaving his residence, Main Road, . . Their children:
