JOHN (JACK) LEONARD BARNARD son of George and Lucy Barnard, was b: 7 May 1890 in Wellington; WW1 Serviceman Serial No.1/217;  He d: 21 Aug 1960 at the Public Hosp., Christchurch aged 70Y. Crem: 23 Aug 1960 Bromley Cem.

He mar: (1) MURIAL DAISY* EDWARDS 11 May 1920, daughter of JOHN EDWARDS and MARY TAYLOR. She was b: 2 Oct 1895,  d: 17 Oct 1938 in Wellington aged 45Y. Bur: 19-Oct-1938 Karori Cem. Area 1, Block A Row 21 Grave 24

He mar: (2) DOROTHY MARIE BLACKMORE nee ALDIS 14 Dec 1940 in Presbyterian Manse, 35 Pirie St, Wellington, daughter of HENRY ALDIS and LOUISA HANWELL. She was b: 1898 in London, England, and d: 1957 in 126 Wairakei Rd, Christchurch aged 62Y. Crem. 22 Jan 1957

1915 Evening Post, 31 May: CALL TO ARMS; 318 RECRUITS LAST WEEK A further twelve men enlisted at No. 5 Area Group on Saturday, making 33 for the day. The total for the week was 318. The names and occupations of Saturday's recruits are John Leonard Barnard warehouseman

WW1  Jack was one of approx. 1400 New Zealand men who served in the Samoan Advance Party (A) They went to Samoa in 1914, returning to New Zealand in March-April 1915.

They were relieved by the Samoa Relief Force (R) who were topped up with small groups of reinforcements throughout the rest of the war and Jack was one of many who then went on to fight in Europe - John went next to Suez in Egypt.

1916 Evening Post, 21 Nov: 1916: Private cable advice received to-day reported that Sergt. J. L. Barnard, who was wounded at Flers on loth September, is, suffering from temporary paralysis, but is making excellent progress. Sergt. Barnard is a son of Mr. G. Barnard., of Oriental Bay, and was a member of the original Samoan Expeditionary Force His wonds left him with difficulty walking.

Dorothy's mother was Emily Lewis. Louisa Hanwell was her step mother whom her father Henry married one month after his divorce to Emily was granted on the grounds of adultery with Henry Clements. Henry was granted custody of their three children.

Daughter of JOHN and MURIAL EDWARDS:

PATRICIA (PAT) LUCY BARNARD  was b; 30 Aug 1921 in Wellington, and d: 27 Jan 2005 in Hawkes Bay Regional Hospital. Crem Napier.

Evening Post, 3 Sept 1921 BIRTHS: BARNARD.—On the 30th August, 1921, at Nurse Murphy's, to Mr and Mrs. J. L. Barnard, Konini-road, Hataitai, a daughter.

She mar: 21 Apr 1945 in St Mary's Church, Merivale to DENIS JOHN ROSSBOROUGH BEARD, son of THOMAS BEARD and DOROTHY SIMPSON. He was b: 26 Jun 1921 in Wellington. At time of their marriage was a wireless operator, at Ohakea and later a sales rep. Denis d: 26 Mar 1998  at Russell, aged 83y.

Widow Pat lived in Rivesdale Village Rest Home, Taradale, Hawkes Bay so she could be near her daughter Denise
