Robert Stanley Chisholm

Bob was the youngest son of George Stanley and Amy Sarah Chisholm (nee Clark), was b 14 Dec 1914 in Wellington, New Zealand. Pilot officer Robert Stanley Chisholm, RNZAF, was attached to RAF 103 Sqn, Bomber Command. Killed in Action near Wervershoof, Netherlands, 13 June 1941, Aged 27. His remains and those of of his air crew were recovered and buried at Jonkerbos Commonwealth War Cemetery at Nijmegen.

After his years at Island Bay Primary School he was able to join his brother Alan at Wellington College, travelling to school by ferry and then tram from Rona Bay. After matriculation, Bob attended Victoria University College where in his first year he gained passes for three units for the Bachelor of Commerce degree. Family circumstances and financial constraints in the early 1930s caused him to give up his B. Com after this one successful year, and he obtained a job with J. R. McKenzie Limited, the the chain store, and became Assistant Manager before leaving for War Service. His work took him to McKenzie stores in different parts of the country - Wanganui, New Plymouth, Invercargill, and Fairlie in South Canterbury. He was a keen sportsman.

While working in Invercargill Bob joined the Southland Aero Club and gained his pilot's licence. When war broke out Britain desperately needed  pilots and March 1940 he embarked for the UK. He had a month's training in bombers and proceeded to take part in operational flights against German targets. He was promoted to Flying officer.

Evening Post,  29 Jan. 1942: PILOT OFFICER'S DEATH The death of Pilot Officer Robert S. Chisholm, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Chisholm, of Wellington, is now officially presumed by the Air Ministry -to have taken place on air operations. Before he left New Zealand at Easter, 1940, to join the Volunteer Reserve of the Royal Air Force, he was an enthusiastic hockey player, originally in Wellington and later when on temporary transfer to other districts as relieving manager for Messrs. J. R. McKenzie, Ltd. He represented both Wanganui and Invercargill against the touring Indian hockey team. In England last season he organised and captained an Air Force team from his station which defeated every other team in the district.
