WALTER
STANNARD Born: 03 Nov 1881 in Hawera. He grew up with the Fall family
and took the Fell surname.
Some time prior to
14th June 1900, Walter travelled to England and enlisted with the Royal
Engineers to fight in the Boer War and embarked on the Troop ship
"Oratuiva" as part of the Cavalry Regiment of Queen's Boys. (1901 census
lists Walter Fell, aged 19 yrs, a Sapper for the Royal
Engineers at the Brampton Barracks, Gillingham, Kent) He joined the Second
Field Troop R E Wakkerstroom and was discharged in 1904 after
obtaining the Queen's Medal - Five Bars
On the 13th Mar. 1913
Walter embarked on the "Orsova" and sailed to Melbourne, Australia. He
enlisted on October 14th 1914 for the Australian Expeditionary Forces at
the age of 33 1/2 yrs and WW1, served 4 yrs and 192 days earning the
1914-1915 Star, 1914-1918 Medal, the Victory Medal and the Returned
Services Badge. He returned to Sydney, NSW
17/4/1919.
He returned to England
where he mar: Lilian Fanny Bubb 19th Aug. 1917 at the Parish Church in
Hanwell, Middlesex, London. He listed John Pedder Fell as his father.
Lilian was b: 3 Nov. 1884 in Willesden, London to parents Richard Thomas
and Fanny Bubb
The 1911 census for
Middlesex, England show Lillian was working as a servant for Mr Henry
Valentine and wife Edith Sinclair at 98 Madeley Rd, London.
Mrs L.F.Fell sailed for
Natal, South Africa on the "Gaika" leaving from London and arrived 27 Aug.
1919. Walter is not on the same passenger list. Lillian d: 21 Feb 1969 and
Walter d; 15 Apr 1963 at South Africa.
