Mr John Oakley, Mayfield, has received advice that his brother, Private R. Oakley, died of wounds on July 25, at the 2nd Australian Casualty Hospital. Private Oakley left, in the Twenty-third Reinforcements.

Src: History of School & District 75th School jubilee 1962:  John Oakley was born in Christchurch of English parentage. At the age of 15 he went to Rakaia where he worked until 1902 when he took up a farm at Mayfield In 1915 he came to Ruapuna taking up part of the Ballantynes Estate, buying his block off Mr George Miller. His wife was Miss Elsie Sercombe also of Engish descent. They had five children - Freda. Robert, Joy, Dawn and Ida. Only Robert remains in the district farming on the farm his father had, Robert married Miss Elaine Dennis who was a teacher at the Ruapuna School for a time and they have three children.In 1960 John died having taken a keen interest in local committees and also supporting the church and other activities generously.
