Gen. One: Frederick's grandfather was Robert Thomas Button b: 1828 in Norfolk, England who, on conclusion of his schooling, was employed at the Norwich Union Fire Office. He mar: abt Jun 1850 in Norwich to Anna Mary Pymar (b:1828 West Hailing, the first born child of parents Thomas Pymar and Mary Anne nee Bradford.

Anna Mary brothers and sister were Robert Thomas Pymar b; 1829; Sarah Marie Pymar b; 1832; Mary Anne Pymar b; 1833; John Pymar b; 1835; Jane Pymar b; 1837; Ellen Pymar b; 1840; Harriet Pymar b; 1842.  Wife Anna Mary Button d: 11 Dec 1909 at Brighton, Christchurch aged 81 yrs.)
 
Robert and Anna left England in 1852 aboard the “Catherine Stewart Forbes and landed at New Plymouth. He farmed first in the Taranaki province where several of their six children were born. In 1859 he moved to Canterbury and settled at Kaiapoi where he had property and found employment as a carpenter and builder.  1863 Robert Button went to Little River for eighteen months before moving to Leeston and became the owner of a threshing machine, then went to Rangitata and purchased an area of Peel Forest bush from Robert Rhodes. He erected a sawmill and prospered from saw milling the totara and farming the cleared land. In 1903 Robert Button bought Brooklyn Lodge, an extensive Christchurch property which incorporated the New Brighton Trotting Club's racecourse. At the village of Arundel, Robert Button laid out a training track on the property for his daughter Bella's equestrian skills and she became well-known in the district driving her team of four or six ponies.

he mill was handed over to one of his sons and Robert purchased a farm at Cooper's Creek, Geraldine where he proved a most successful farmer. Three years prior to his death he met with an accident by falling from a horse, and became after his very active life, an invalid. He lived from time to time at New Brighton and here his wife predeceased him in 1909 and on . He died at his residence, Cooper's Creek, near Geraldine aged 83 yrs; (Bur: Linwood Cem Q10.07) They left a family of two sons and two daughters.

Frederick's father was Robert Thomas Button***  who Mar: (1) at St, Stephen's Church, Ashburton on 29 Jun 1892 was to Fanny Fawcett (b: 1863 Died: 12 Feb 1895 Bur: Ashburton Cem. 14/02/1895) Their son Robert Thomas Pymar Button was born 1893 and d: 1959 aged 64 yrs, a farmer at Te Pirita, Rakaia.

After Fanny's death, Robert Thomas Button remarried in 1896 to Elizabeth Ann Matthews (b: 1866 d: 1934)

As a child Elsie lived at Cross St, Temuka with her family and attended the Temuka Primary School. She was enrolled 7 Feb 1921 and left 16 Dec 1927 for Hilton. 

Source “Benbow Book”: "Elsie was very musical and could whistle like a canary, a rare talent for a lady and much appreciated by audiences who enjoyed the sweet whistled old melodies. She had been taught by her father who was a good whistler. Elsie became a keen ballroom dancer entering competitions and later she married her dancing partner Fred Button."
