Richard was a painter and paper hanger in Temuka - a photo of his business premises (below) with daughter Hazel. Bertha was very clever at crochet work, knitting, sewing and hanwrok and had a lady run her craft shop - she eventually took over the bursiness and did very well selling all types of baby wear from layettes to toys. The family suffer losing their property in in a fire in the early 1920s and the following depression years were difficult. Bertha was a great lover of flowers, arrangingflowers for weddings and her church and was well known for her lovely garde. and her daughters also inherited her love of art and flowers. (Src. found the need to follow her own form of art and in Motueka would work on
Christmas window decorations in High Sreet, Motueka. Later she took on
pottery and sculpture. Her paintings used strong colours and bold design
preferring oil but to meet the demand and make a living from her work, her
subject field was wide. Their family;
