Generation 1: MATHEW CROSS b abt 1764 at Charmouth, Dorset mar: 8 Feb 1785 to SUSANNA VIRGIN (b: 1763 Axminster, Devon d: 27 Mat 1896) Mathew d: 27 Apr 1842 Devon.
 
Generation 2: Their son was GEORGE CROSS (b: 1797 � d: 4 Sep 1881 Devon) mar 26 Nov 1826 MARY ANN GODDARD (b: 1801 � d: 28 Jan 1891 Devon).
 
Generation 3: JOHN CROSS was born 26 June 1834 in Membury, Devon (Bapt 11 Oct 1834) He left his parental home in Axminster, Devon for Combeinteiteignhead (near Exeter) where he married on 11 Oct 1855 to SARAH SETTER(her parents were WILLIAM and MARY SETTER) in Combeinteignhead. She was born 1833 in Crediton, Devon. John was ag. lab., farmer and butcher and he and Sarah raised 14 children in Combeinteignhead before Sarah died 18 Nov 1885 from Bright's disease. 

By then, five eldest sons had immigrated to Australia and New Zealand and three more sons eventually migrated to NZ. In 1905, the eldest son George, by now a land-owning farmer, returned to England (possibly for youngest brother Walter's wedding) and brought his widowed father John back to New Zealand. He lived with son John and died aged 80 on 23 Oct 1914 at Temuka where he was buried

4 WILLIAM (BILL) CROSS, b. 26 May 1862, Bap. 13 Jul 1862 at Combeinteignhead, Newton Abbot, Devon, England; sailed on the Merkera 1883 with 3 brothers to Australia, disembarking at Mackay and went on to NZ, d. 20 Jan 1946, Princess St. Temuka. 

5 JOHN CROSS, b. 23 Mar 1864. In 1883 sailed on the Merkara with three brothers disembarking at Mackay and went on to NZ. Mar: 10 Oct 1899 to MARGARET EVELYN RUTTER (d 1930 aged 49y) John was a farmer and carrier at Temuka where he d: 14 Jan 1949 Temuka

10 HENRY CROSS, bap. 26 Oct 1873. He mar: 1897 to BEATRICEA MITCHELMORE (b 1875 d: 22 Jul 1945) and they sailed to NZ 1903 on the "Ruapehu"  where he farmed at Pareora and died 1950 at Timaru
