George's parents lived at Maude St, Temuka - he was enrolled at the Temuka Primary School 8 Sep 1924

1933 - While playing in the grounds of the local Dustrict High School at Temuka, George Benbow fell on loose gravel and injured his knee. At the time the injury was not considered serious, but tetanus (lockjaw) developed and the lad was in a serious condition when admitted to Timaru hospital.

1 April 1940: Six hundred and ninety men have now enlisted at Timaru for overseas service. among them,  G. W. H. Benbow, Army No: 13766. In the WW2 military forces, George, a keen bandsman, played in the Army Base Band at Madi Camp along with his cousin Malcolm Shepherd under the baton of Lt Bowe

11 Feb 1944: Troops on Furlough: Arrived at Wellington after service in the Middle East: Pte G W H Benbow (m, Mrs C B Benbow, 31 Allnutt St, Temuka)

On returning home, he was with the Kiwi Concert Party, joined the Motueka Brass Band and later switched to Dixieland Jazz. His abilities  allowed him to alternate between the trombone, saxaphone and piano and George lead an old time dance band.

George mar: in 1945 at Ashburton to MERLE DOREEN MARY SHERRATT (b: 1923 dau. of Harold William Sherratt (1897-1971) and her mother Mabel Lillian Harding (1896-1989)

 Merle  loved music  and possessed a fine alto voice. She attended the Ashburton East School; 1939 gained a Life Saving Royal Society Award; was a pupil of St Margaret's College High School where in Form 6 in 1940, gained First Class shield. She sang in the Anglican Church Choir in Ashburton;

When living at Takaka 1946 George (occ: was "mercer") and Merle became involved in the Takaka Drama Society and with the Dramatic Society when they lived in Motueka, . In 1956 - they lived at 73 The Ridgeway, Stoke, Nelson; occ: Warehouseman. Merle d. 03 Jun 1959 in Marsden Valley, Nelson aged 36Y. Bur: Marsden Cem. Nelson (Block 04A Plot 1 025)

Merle and George had three children:

George 2nd mar: 1960 was to DAPHNE (MOLLY) JOYCE Taylor nee ORR (she was b. 01 Apr 1929 in Kent, England; d: 2006. )When three, Daphne had been adopted by the Orrs, a childless couple in Hokitika, (Her original name was Lochore.) Daphne played the violin and worked as a dental nurse in Christchurch. Her 1st mar: was  in 1947 to Robert Samuel (Bob) Stafford (b: 18 Mar 1910 to parents Charles and Margaret Stafford; he d: 2000) Bob's family owned hotels in Christchurch - they divorced in 1958;

Mollys  three 3 children were adopted by George Benbow

George William Herbert Benbow (No 13766 2nd NZEF Base Band WW2) On March 8 suddenly at his home in Nelson aged 90 years. Much treasured husband of Elizabeth and the late Merle and brother of Kath (Rotorua)
Father of Ross, Gillian, Warwick (Perth) Rosemary (Melbourne) Linda, Barry and Ian. His funeral will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Trafalgar Street, Nelson, on Thursday March 12th at 2 pm.
