William Lyon left as an unassisted
immigrant to join Australia's great gold rush from
Gravesend in Oct 1861 with his brother Thomas aged 29Y on board
the ship "Netherby" to Victoria. With two mates he tramped from
Ballarat to Sydney, a distance of 500 miles He tired of
Australia, and with gold having been found in New Zealand, in
1865 he came to the colony and worked on the West Coast and
Otago goldfields. In 1866 he purchased a small farm of 50 acres for
£100. He farmed this for about 12 months and in 1867 along with with
Messrs John Talbot and William< Wright, who also were living in
the Rakaia-Selwyn district, they came to Temuka. William
shortly afterwards bought a farm of 100 acres at Rangitira Valley.
From time to time he added to his farm by purchasing the
properties of Messrs Cook, Swaney, and Davcy, until at the
time of his death he had one of the best farms in the district. His
energies were not all devoted to his farm - with Mr John Talbot he
brought one of the first steam threshing plants into the district, a
portable engine supplying the motive power. After many years
service, this wore out, and was replaced by the purchase of a
traction plant, and later on still another. The partnership with Mr
Talbot in the milling business continued abt 2 years before his
death. Another venture was with Joseph Harrop - they started a
grocery business and also sank a considerable sum of money
in the ill-fated Temuka Linseed Company.
William Lyon proved a true friend and
a splendid neighbour who had good health until 1909 but after an
illness from which he to a considerable extent
recovered, saw a return of his alarming symptoms and he died on
the farm at Rangitira until his end on 31 Oct 1910.
