local shows

Temuka Leader  13 Jan 1900: A quiet wedding took place 10th Januaryy, in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church last Wednesday morning, when Mr Patrick Mitten was married to Miss Mabel Ackroyd, sixth daughter of Mr J. Ackroyd, of Waitohi. Miss Nora Fitzgerald was bridesmaid, and Mr E. Ackroyd, brother of the bride, was best man. The wedding breakfast was held at Mr John Ackroyd’s residence, where a large outhouse was got up for the occasion and nicely decorated. Between 45 and 50 people were present, amongst them being the friends and neighbors of the bride’s parents. The toast of The Bride and Bridegroom was proposed in felicitous terms by Mr John Fitzgerald, J.P., and duly responded to by the bridegroom. The health of the bride’s parents was also honored, and the whole afternoon was spent in social intercourse. The bride and bridegroom left on their wedding tour by express for Dunedin.

Temuka Leader  28 Apr 1904: ASSESSMENT COURT A sitting of the Court for the Temuka Borough and Road Districts was held in the Temuka Courthouse Patrick Mitten, 174 acres 2r 7p, assessed at £2244, £1483, £60. Mr Mitten said he was paying 7s l0d for the land and consiklered it worth £5 per acre. Got land seven years ago when it was valued at £8 10s, and did not consider it had improved in nature since. He compared it with other land and mentioned a creek, which reduced its value. Mr Allan said all the other settlers places were valued at a similar rate and they had not objected. Property had risen 20 per cent. Reduced to £2125, £l74u, and £30.

Timaru Herald  17 Oct 1913; HORSE PARADE.GERALDINE. Under the auspices of the Geraldine Sale Yards Company a parade of stallions was held on Wednesday. Wild Palm, the property of Messrs P. Mitten and' P. Davidson ' gained a lot of admiration, being a fine stamp of trotter with a splendid temper. He i s a son of Wild Wood (2.24), and. has the blood of two renowned ancestors Electioner and George Wilkes—while he is half-brother to Ribbon and Wildwood Junior. His yearlings are said to be very promising.

Auckland Star, 9 August 1933 : TIMARU A fatality occurred at the Catholic Presbytery at Temuka, 11 miles from Timaru, early this evening when the housekeeper, Mrs Mabel Mitten, wife of Mr Patrick Mitten of Temuka, came in contact with current from the electric heater. She was found dead in the bathroom at about six o'clock. Verdict for death

JOHN (JACK) JAMES MUTTEN (b: 16 Oct 1905 Temuka; a dairy farmer supplying the Milford Dairy Co ; he d: 05 Mar 1927 in Temuka 22 Y Bur Temuka) OBITUARY: Widespread sorrow was felt in Temuka when'the news of the untimely end of the late Mr John James Mitten, of Milford, became generally known on Saturday morning, as he was very popular with a large section of the community. He was 22 years of age, and spent the whole of his life in Temuka. taking a keen and active part in football np to a short time ago. He vai captain of the first iourth-grade football team entered from Temuka in the competitions in 19 21. On Saturday, February 26, he was riding his motor-cycle along iFairView road near Timaru, and failing to negotiate a corner, was. thrown down a bank, causing injuries do his back to which he succumbed at the Timaru Hospital on Saturday morning. Deceased is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs P. Mitten and three sisters , Mrs R. Quinn, Mrs C. McAteer, and Miss M. Mitten to whom the sincere sympathy of the community is extended in their sad bereavement. One of the largest funerals seen in Temuka for some years past, took place on Sunday afternoon, when the remains of the late Mr Mitten were interred in the Temuka Cemetery. There were' over forty cars and twenty horse-drawn vehicles in the cortege," which left the St. Josephs Catholic Church for the cemetery. Among those present were the members of . the fourth grade Temuka football, team. The services at St. Joseph’s and at the cemetery were conducted by the Rev. Father Fraher, the pallbearers being Messrs B. Cason, L. McAteer, P. Mitten and A. Cameron, and there were a large number of beautiful, floral tributes placed on his last resting place.

All heavy dairying land, close to factory and, within two miles from Tejnuka. The Property will be sold subject to a 1st mortgage of £600 at (1 per cent., due in about two years. Immediate possession. ALSO -7-9 Harley-Davidson Motor Cycle in good running order. Recently overhauled.
