Marjorie Bertha Barney & John Dean* Goffin

M ARJORIE BERTHA
BARNEY was born
11 Dec 1916 in Georgetown, Waitaki, the daughter of Charles Barney and Amy
(Nee Mattingley) She died 19 Sep 2005 in Palmerston North. On 9th Dec
1939 in Wellington, she married JOHN DEAN*
GOFFIN son of
HENRY GOFFIN and
CATHERINE FERGUSON
Dean was born 09 Jul 1916 and first attended the Mt Cook
School Wellington and both the Christchurch Technical College
and Napier Boys High School. He grew up in a musically active
Salvation Army family - his father (Henry Charles Goffin) was a
famous bandmaster and composer of popular marches. From a very young age
he was active in the musical life of New Zealand, both in and out of the
Salvation Army, becoming, at the age of 19, bandmaster of the famed
Wellington South Corps.
He enlisted in the New Zealand Army at the outbreak of
World War II and was appointed bandmaster of the 4th Brigade Band.
The band was sent to Crete in 1941 and fought there as a infantry platoon
under Lt. Goffin during the ill-fated campaign. Lt. Goffin was later
complimented by Sir Howard Kippenberger, one of New Zealands greatest
soldiers, for his performance as a platoon
commander.
After returning to civilian life Dean became
the first major Salvation Army composer to complete a bachelor in music
from Otago University in 1950 and trained to become a
Salvation Army Officer and Marjorie and Dean were commissioned Salvation
Army Officers in 1951, serving initially in New Zealand, then for 10 years
he was responsible for the Salvation Armys music in Great Britain holding
the position of National Bandmaster (1956-1960) and National Secretary for
bands and Songster Brigades (1960-1966). He toured widely overseas as
a Director of Salvation Army Bands, with his wife Marjorie and family.
While in England his son Tony was drowned in an accident in Iceland while
holidaying there.
Transferred back to New Zealand (1966), Goffin
assumed senior administrative positions culminating in his appointment as
Territorial Commander (1980). He composed not only music for the Army
but for non-Army bands as well, such as his "Rhapsody in Brass" which is
part of the New England Brass Band's repertoire and was
recorded on the Woolston Brass CD, Millennium. His
"The Light of the World" takes its inspiration from the famous painting of
the same name by William Holman Hunt. Dean Goffin's
musical meditation on Hunt's painting uses two well-known hymns from the
Salvation Army Tune Book to tell the story of Christ knocking at the door.
The first, played by the cornet section, "O Jesus Thou Art Standing
Outside the Fast Closed Door" uses the tune ("Aurelia") which is also the
tune for the well known hymn "The Church's One Foundation" and tells the
story from the point of view of one inside the house, on the side of the
door opposite the knocking Christ. The second tune, the chorus section
from "Behold Me Standing at the Door", played poignantly by the horn
section, utilizes words of Christ. A two note "knocking" motif begins the
piece and is heard throughout.
Dean returned to New Zealand in 1971 and held
a variety of posts before being elevated to that of Commissioner for New
Zealand and Fiji and was knighted in the 1983 Queens Birthday Honours
List, an honour they both richly deserved as they worked hard and took
great responsibility with the high positions with the Salvation Army. Lady
Marjorie believes the honour was a tribute to the Salvation Army in its
centennial year and was bestowed on him because he was a New Zealander in
the "Top Job".
A highly gifted composer, Dean created music that
speaks of the deep but simple truths that formed the foundation of his
life, and that were the constant themes of his preaching. His ten years in
the United Kingdom, years marked by personal tragedy as well as triumph,
were crucial for restoring strength and quality to Salvation Army music in
that country, and his musical and personal influence around the world have
been profound.
Dean Goffin was a man much loved and respected throughout the
overlapping worlds of brass bands and The Salvation Army, and in 1984 was
promoted to Glory the following year, 23 Jan 1984
