both of
Temuka. Mr Callard was visiting the Old Country after an absence
of 23
years, and Mr Trumper was seeing the Old Land for the first time.
The
Times gives a sketch of Mr Callards career in the colonies, a
great part
of which was spent in Australia, nine years in farming. The
drought of
I899, however, proved too much for Mr Callard, and he sold out and
came to
New Zealand, According to the Times, Messrs Callard and Trumper
had a most
enjoyable and interesting trip Home In the Warrimoo. On landing’
Mr
Callard proceeded to his native village of Cooinbo, visiting the
old
scenes, which brought back pleasant memories of boyhood. Making
Coombe and
Newton Abbot the centre, Mr Callard set out to show his
brother-in-law
some of the beauty spots of fair Devon. Paignton, Torquay (with a
return
through St. Marychurch and lovely Babbacombe were visited : next
Teignmouth, and then there was a run through the Teign Valley to
Trusham,
Starcross, Exmouth, and Exeter were next
visited in
turn.
Later Mr Callard took Mr Trumper to London to see the great city,
of
which, as a colonial he had heard so much, and they did the
sights well.
The Bank of England, Exchange, Mansionhouse, Tower, Towerbridge,
St.
Pauls, the Museums, Windsor Castle, and a hundred other places
of
interest, were visited. Altogether Messrs Callard and Trumper seem
to have
had a splendid trip.
