Evening Post, 19 November 1945 THREE LIVES LOST - CAR FALLS INTO RIVER

Three lives were lost Nov 18, when a motorcar left the road near Pukeroa, about 14 miles from Hunterville, at two am this morning and plunged over a 20-foot bank into the Turakina River where it was submerged in more than 20 feet of water. Only one of the four occupants managed to reach the bank. He had the assistance of a party from a car which was following. The three victims were: Mr. Reginald Guilford, aged 38, White. Street, Wanganui East: Mr. Sydney Clarence Green, aged 22, single, of 9 Moore Avenue, Wanganui, and Miss Gladys Janette Chapman, aged 24, single, of 50 Wilson Street, Wanganui.
The other occupant of the car was Mr. Norman Nation, married, of Pukeroa. Mr Green, who had recently returned from service abroad in the Navy, was spending a holiday with Mr. Nation at Pukeroa, and Mr. Guilford and Miss Chapman went to Pukeroa on Saturday afternoon to spend the weekend as guests in the same home. All four attended a dance at the Pukeroa Hall, leaving after the dance to return home with Mr. Guilford driving his coupe. At a bad bend in the road, near what is known as the Pohonui turnoff. the car ran for twenty yards along the edge of the road and then plunged over the bank, dropping into a deep hole in the Turakina River. The occupants of the other car saw the lights leave the road and pulled up. They heard a cry for help and discovered Mr. Nation, whom they assisted to the bank, but the other occupants were apparently injured in the crash ,and were beyond assistance. The car was recovered with difficulty from the river about 3.30 p.m. today by Constable J. Scannell, Hunterville, with other assistance. An inquest was opened later todayat Marton.
