In 1910 P. W. G. Barlow,
Opotiki, is listed with other LICENSED SURVEYORS OF THE DOMINION and
in 1916 his occupation given as "Licensed Surveyor
at Auckland". The family moved to Napier where "Mr. P. W. G. Barlow, chief draughtsman and land transfer
draughtsman, Napier, has been appointed chief surveyor,
Napier."
His words are quoted in "'The Shock of '31' By Geoff Conly, AH & AW Reed Ltd 1931 Earthquake Survivor Stories: Mr P.W Barlow, chief surveyor with the Napier branch of the Lands and Survey Department, had just completed drafts of letters to be typed when the room began to shake. He pushed his large swivel chair out from his desk, lay on the floor, put his legs under the desk and his head under the chair. He felt the culmination of the earthquake as a violent shake, 'similar to the shaking a fox terrier given when killing a rat' he said. Then came the big crash. Bricks were raining into the room and the dust was so thick he could not see his hand 25 centimetres away from his face.![]() In 1951 in his retirement Peter William
George Barlow wrote several manuscripts - these are housed in the
Alexander Turnbull Library at Wellington. One describes his life as a surveyor,
living in the bush, the daily routines, the lives of women and some of the
changes that have taken place since these early years. He delivered a recorded talk
about his experineces on 2YZ , 12th Oct 1950, and wrote about
"Strange freaks of nature in New Zealand" His obituary was in
the Daily Telegraph, on 12 June 1955
