Alfred & Charlotte Caroline Oakley

ALFRED OAKLEY (b: abt. 1828 in Strumpshaw, Norfolk, England, bapt:  25 Jan 1830 at St Peter Lingford, son of THOMAS OAKLEY (1797-1881) Occ: Labourer and ANN nee BETTS (1790 - 1875). He d: 7 Aug 1914 in Rakaia, Canterbury. His marriage on Jul 1852 to  CHARLOTTE CAROLINE HARDESTY was at Blofield, Norfolk - she was b: Abt. 1826 in Strumpshire.
 
Alfred began work as a boy working 7 days a week from dawn to dusk and finding his own food for 3d. a week. He took half a day off work to get married - his wedding presents were an axe and a spade. He worked hard and was respected and eventually became farm manager. Due to economic conditions after the Crimean War they emigrated to New Zealand on the Strathallen's 2nd voyage with their three children, and sailed 12 Oct 1858 from London.

The voyage took 92 days from London and on the 24th October, their infant son William died and was buried at sea. Passengers destined for Timaru were discharged on the 15th January along with cargo and the Strathallen then continued on to Lyttleton arriving on the 21 Jan 1859.
Lyttelton 1858Onshore, the Oakley family were quartered in barracks and the next day walked over the Bridle Path to Christchurch where they first settled at Riccarton and later lived at Brookside.
Alfred found employment first with Mr Hill at Avonside where he remained for 10 years and also at clearing up the Heathcote and Avon. For the nect thirteeen and a half years he worked with Mr Charles Withell and in 1883,  he and wife Charlotte moved to Rakaia where Charlotte d: 27 Dec 1890 in Rakaia.

JOHN OAKLEY: (b. 20 Aug 1852, Norfolk, England; d. 16 Jan 1896, Halkett). He mar: 1872 to Emma Peagram, daughter of Charles Peagram (1826 - 1878) and wife Ann who  arrived into Lyttelton 9 May 1860 on the Gananoque with wife Ann and family: Charles, Edward, Mary Ann and youngest Emma - she was b: 1853 in Scotland, and d: 06 Aug 1929 in Halkett, Selwyn They had 8 children;.

 ii. ROBERT OAKLEY: ( Birth 27 Jan 1855; bapt. 4th Mar 1855 at St Peter, Lingwood,  Strumpshore, Norfolk, England; he d. 01 Nov 1927, Rakaia, Canterbury). He mar: 4th Nov. 1880 at the Presbyterian Church,  Leeston to Margaret Mary Jane McVinney Doyle who was b: Abt. 1862 in Dumfries, Scotland to parents John and Margaret Doyle and they came to New Zealand on the ship Queen of the Mersey in 1862. She d: at Overdale, Sep 19th, 1931 and was bur; at Rakaia. They had 8 children;

iii. WILLIAM OAKLEY: b: 14 Oct 1857, Norfolk, England; Bapt: 11 Nov 1857 at St Peter, Lingwood,  Strumpshore, Norfolk; d. 24 Oct. 1858 at sea

iv. SUSANAH BETTS OAKLEY: (b: 25 Dec 1859, Avonside, Christchurch; d: 28 Oct 1940) She mar: 10 Jul 1883 at the Sydenham Presbyterian Church to John Cleland He was b: 1861 in Ireland and d: 24 Feb 1947 Belfast. No family

iv. WILLIAM OAKLEY; (b. 17 Nov 1862, Riccarton, Canterbury; d. 28 Dec 1939, Ashburton). He mar: 5th Nov 1884 in St Peters, Riccarton, Christchurch to Sarah Ellen Lewis  who was b: 10 Oct 1864 in Oxford St. Lyttleton to parents Esau Lewis and Belinda Louisa nee Kerridge who imigrated from Suffolk on the Cardigan Castle in 1876. She d: 23 Nov 1944 in Ashburton They had 12 children.

vi. EMILY MARY OAKLEY: (b: 1 Jan 1864 in Rakaia, Ashburton d: 1948 in Rakaia) mar: 1891 to cousin Cuthbert Henry Oakley. He was b: 1869 in Victoria, Australia and d: 7 Jul 1946 in Ashburton. They had 3 daughters.

vii. SARAH OAKLEY: (b: 28 Jan 1868, Avonside, Christchurch; d: 1945) She mar: 13th Aug 1884 at her father's residence to Samuel Ross who was b: 1855 at Glenark, County Tyrone, Ireland, and came on the“Eastern Monarch” to New Zealand in 1874. They had 9 children.
