Sarah Oakley & Samuel Ross

SARAH OAKLEY  youngest dau: of ALFRED and Chalotte Oakley was b: 28 Jan 1868 at Avonside, Christchurch, and d: 1945 aged 77Y . She mar: 13 Aug 1884 at the Overdale home of her parents's to SAMUEL ROSS, eldest son of Mr Samuel  Ross,  Newton Stewart,  County Tyrone,  Ireland.

Samuel Ross was born in 1855, at Glenark, Newtown Stewart, County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to New Zealand by the ship "Eastern Monarch" in 1874. He was first engaged for six months as ploughman by the late Mr. J. P. Barr, and was, for the ensuing five years, with the late Mr. J. Hall, of Leeston,

Mr. Ross removed to Rakaia in 1882, and for about eight years he owned and worked a threshing plant in partnership with Mr. Leonard White.

On the dissolution of the partnership, Mr. Ross started farming on his present property, which he had previously bought while it was in its unimproved state, and without any buildings.

He has thoroughly improved the land, and erected a handsome homestead, with large offices and sheds, on a well chosen site. Mr. Ross Annually fattens lambs for freezing, and also crops a portion of his land. He has for some time been a member of the Overdale school committee.

7 Oct Samuel held a clearing sale  and was farewelled from the district and left for his new property, called "Dellmount," at  Titipua

Mataura Ensign , 8 Nov 1909: TENDERS are of Stables (12 stall) and Implement Shed combined. For particulars apply Samuel Ross, Waimumu. Tenders close on November 1/5, 1909.

7 Mar 1912: At Mr S Ross's there are to be seen two paddocks, 120 acres of Sparrowbill oats and is the first grain crop that has been taken off the land. The other 30 acre crop is not quite so far advanced but it is estimated it will produce over 60 bushels. His 260 acre turnip crop is somewhat patchy.

Most settlers of Waimumu have lignite coal deposits on their farms and dug this for winter fuel supply. The road through Titipua Flat was found difficult to negotiate - one settler said, "I have been out here for over five years now, and during that time we have only had five or six loads of gravel placed on tho road." Sam was elected to the committee of the Titipua Householders in 1913 and advised the Southland County Council of the state of the steep cutting on the Mataura-Hedgehope between Osborne's and Howarth's homesteads asking that gravel be spread on it.

April 1913: A weekly mail service and telephonic facilities were granted by the Postal Department to the settlers at Titipua, the office being located at Sanuel Ross's farm. The weekly mail service was inceaed to a service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Ploughingbut a wet autumn meant sowing at that period had to be abandoned but ,eant plenty of winter feed of turnips and grass available
