Hugh mar: 1 Aug 1871 in Dromore, County Down, Ireland to ANN JANE KNOX, daughter of JOHN KNOX and MARGARET JANE WILMOR JUSTIN. She was b: 09 Mar 1849 in Dromara, County Down, and d: 15 Nov 1908 in Ashburton. Bur: 17/11/1908 Ashburton Cem.
Hugh occ: labourer County Down, aged 23 yrs, emigrated to Canterbury with wife Jane 22 and their 2 daughters - Anna 2y and Mary aged 6 mths on the ship "Rakaia" which left 6 Jan 1874 and arr: 20 Apr 1874 with 289 Government emigrants. At Mayfield where he farmed, Hugh served on the School Committee from 1890 and on the Householder's committee. In 1889 he sold his farm Ashburton Guardian, 5 Nov 1890: An accident happened on Sunday night to Mr Hugh Brannan, a resident on the north side of the Hinds river. A man named Horton was on his way to Work from Mount Somers, and called at Brannan's house. When he left, Brannan went with him to show him across the paddock, and in the darkness; the men mistook the track and both fell over a terrace from fifteen to twenty feet deep. Mr Brannan broke his leg just above the ankle, and Horton got a shaking but nothing serious. Brannan was taken to the Ashburton Hospital on Monday morning by the train, where the injured limb was attended and the sufferer is progressing favorably. Ashburton Guardian, 19 Nov 1891: At a special meeting of the Canterbury Land Board held at the Land Office on Tuesday last, the following lands were sold for cash in the Ashburton district, Lot 4, section 56297, lot 4, containing 50 acres to Hugh Brannan.
