George left and became a popular touring -car proprietor. He and Mary were living at 7 Carey St, Lower Riccarton in 1921 when she died in an accident between Diamond Harbour and Church Bay and was bur: at the Lyttelton Cemetery

George found it necessary to put a notice in the Press; "OWING to persistent RUMOURS that the CAR concerned in the recent sad accident was one of the OAKLEY SERVICE CARS, I want to explain that the CAR CONCERNED was a PRIVATE CAR, driven by its owner, and was NOT one of my Cars or Drivers. G. A. OAKLEY"

George re-married 1922 to Edith Maud Mary Armstrong.  In July 1922 his taxicab business struck financial difficulties and a meeting of creditors was held in Christchurch, In his statement, George said that about April, 1918, he left his position as engine-driver with the Tramway Board and began business as a taxi-cab proprietor.

He bought his first car for £90, and spent £50 in renovating it. The first year he took about £1400. He bought a five-seater and later a seven-seater. He did fairly well with the two cars, but one of his drivers had a bad smash near Sefton, which cost him nearly £200. He entered the Christchurch to Akaroa motor service dependant on money advanced which was still not fully repaid.
