Robert and Anna left England in
1852 aboard the Catherine Stewart
Forbes
and landed at New Plymouth. He farmed first in the Taranaki
province where
several of their six children were born. In 1859 he moved to
Canterbury
and settled at Kaiapoi where he had property and found employment
as a
carpenter and builder. 1863 Robert Button went to Little
River for
eighteen months before moving to Leeston and became the owner
of a
threshing machine, then went to Rangitata and
purchased an area
of Peel Forest bush from Robert Rhodes. He erected a sawmill
and
prospered from saw milling the totara and farming the cleared
land.
In 1903 Robert Button bought Brooklyn
Lodge, an
extensive Christchurch property which incorporated the New
Brighton
Trotting Club's racecourse. At the village of
Arundel,
Robert Button laid out a training track on the property for his
daughter
Bella's
equestrian
skills and she became well-known in the district driving
her
team of four or six
ponies.
The mill was handed over to one of his sons and Robert purchased a farm at Cooper's Creek, Geraldine where he proved a most successful farmer. Three years prior to his death he met with an accident by falling from a horse, and became after his very active life, an invalid. He lived from time to time at New Brighton and here his wife predeceased him in 1909 and on . He died at his residence, Cooper's Creek, near Geraldine aged 83 yrs; (Bur: Linwood Cem Q10.07) They left a family of two sons and two daughters. 1877 Timaru Herald, 28 Feb: LAND TRANSFER ACT NOTICE.
