ACKROYD (b. 12 Jul 1887 to parents John Edmund Ackroyd and Maria Ackroyd nee Taylor;
he d: 14 Jun 1938 at Temuka where he was buried.

17 Mar 1917: At the Timaru sitting of the Miltary
Appeal Board, Herbert Ackroyd's appeal was allowed as he was passed
by the medical Board as only fit for home service (Class 2) and able to
be called up be the authorities when required
In 1921 after the death of his father,
Herbert inherited his father's farm. Flooding of the land was an ongoing
problem. Water race adjustments in 1926 were done and this
substantually helped ease the problem however the race further up
remained very faul.
Herbert mar: 07 Aug 1928 in residence of
his bride's mother Mrs W Thomas at Epworth, Temuka to EDITH EMILY nee
THOMAS (b: 09 Jan 1898 in Temuka; she d: 19 Oct 1963 at 310
King Street Temuka )
They had 5 children:
1 Vivian James* (Jim) Ackroyd born
1922 in Temuka. Military service: Sergeant Royal NZ Airforce
Service No 415510 Killed in active service WW2 aged 21 years. The
aircraft with four crew on board, suffered engine failure caused by fuel starvation and the
aircraft crashed when attempting an emergency landing at Redstone
Cross near Sodston on 01 Apr 1943, Penbrokeshire, Sth Wales. The
three casualties were buried
at Robeston Wathen Churchyard, Penbrokeshire - Stewart
Colclough RAF; John Henry Norman Australian RAF - one
survived.
Vivian enlisted into the NZ Royal Airforce
and was posted to Britain to train as a Wireless operator / Air
Gunner with the 306 Ferry Training Unit, which the Royal Air
Force formed at RAF Templeton in Jan 1843 with Bristol Beauforts
and moved to Maghaberry in June of 1943. Vivian is
recorded on the War Memorial at Templeton, a village which was used as an airfirld base in the Second
World War, and is about a mile south of Narberth
